CBS recently announced the first new soap opera in 25 years, Beyond the Gates. This soap opera set to make history as one of only two ever made that centered on the life of a African American family, is drumming up the nostalgia of life with grandma on sick days. IYKYK.
For many in Generation X, the melodious theme tunes of soap operas like "Young and the Restless," "All My Children," or "Days of our Lives" still evoke a sense of sentimentality, reminding us of days enthralled by the convoluted lives of characters who felt almost like family. I literally included characters in my prayers at night lol!
These shows, often dismissed as mere entertainment, were more than just a way to pass time—actually they were a daily exercise in storytelling, suspense, and the exploration of human emotion. As we navigate midlife, it turns out there's quite a bit we can learn from those afternoon dramas.
Embrace Change Like a Soap Opera Star
If soap operas have taught us anything, it’s that change is the only constant. Characters faced outlandish, ridiculous plot twists—amnesia, explosions, evil twins, sudden disappearances—but they always adapted. Midlife is often a time of significant change: career shifts, family dynamics evolving, and personal growth. Embracing change, and deal with the shock in your BEST dramatic soap opera gasp. But rather than fearing it, allow it to lead to renewal and unexpected opportunities, much like the rebirths of our favorite soap opera characters.

Resilience: The Hallmark of Every Heroine
Soap operas were rife with heroines who endured endless trials—love triangles, corporate battles, and personal betrayals—only to emerge stronger. This resilience is incredibly relevant in midlife. Whether it’s bouncing back from a career setback or navigating the complexities of family life, the ability to recover and press forward is as crucial now as it was for those indomitable characters, even if you need to flip a table (figuratively) to jumpstart your motivation.
Complex Relationships: A Mirror to Our Lives
The intricate relationships in soap operas often mirrored our own relational dramas, filled with misunderstandings, reconciliations, and deep bonds. These shows highlighted the importance of communication, forgiveness, and the hard work required to maintain relationships. In midlife, these lessons remain pertinent as we strive to deepen bonds with friends, partners, and family, understanding that like any good soap opera, it’s the relationships that provide the richest drama and the deepest joy.
I remember watching Dallas and it was widely known that JR & Bobby, although brothers, were bitter rivals. One time Bobby got in trouble and unbeknownst to him, JR fixed it. When Bobby found out later that it was JR that did it, he asked him why. JR responded something to the effect that "You are my brother. You are a Ewing, family. I won't let you fall by someone else hand". I NEVER forgot that and oddly keep that moniker in the back of my head with my siblings (also BIG Dallas fans, Thanks mom). I said that to say, that watching the complexity of relationships in dramas, can indirectly help you navigate your own.
The Value of Escapism
Finally, soap operas were an escape, a daily respite from our own troubles. They reminded us of the value of stepping away from our stresses and immersing ourselves in a different world. In midlife, finding balance from work, healthy ways to escape—through hobbies, travel, or the arts—is vital for mental health and overall well-being. Just as we tuned in to watch the dramatic lives of our favorite characters, we can now find new ways to give ourselves a much-needed break.
As much as they were often lampooned, soap operas were a cultural touchstone for Generation X, teaching us about human nature, resilience, and the beauty of a well-told story. As we face the challenges and opportunities of midlife, the lessons from those days spent watching daytime dramas can still serve us well, reminding us to embrace change, nurture relationships, and occasionally, enjoy a good escape.
