Time & Your Workload

One thing we cannot change is the amount of time we have in a given day. Sure, we can wake up early, burn the midnight oil, or simply cram and cram more into our schedules. But doing so can cause us to suffer from stress, illness, and burn-out.?
So how do we better use our time to manage a workload and personal goals that we’ve committed to? I want to share one thing that's worked well for me over the past few years: a physical planner (and the concepts within).?
Let's start with the planner - I suggest using something that requires you actually write in it daily. Too many of us are living off of our Outlook calendars without scheduling a simple lunch break, walk with the dog, and afternoon out of the office to run errands for ourselves. (OK, maybe the majority of people are good at blocking out time for that last one. But let's focus on the health stuff.)?
My point is, we need a tool that can blend the personal with professional, block out time for our own interest, family time, and professional commitments.?
Here are a few that I think are simple to use while still providing solid planning resources:?
I chose the two tools above because they do not focus on to-do lists; they are priority driven. As professionals, we frequently get caught up in what needs to be done quickly versus what needs to be done to create a true impact in our work. Those priorities are the things that your employer pays you for- the sales calls that pay your bills, etc., not running to the copier for your co-worker because you said you would. Make sense??
Once you have your priorities in front of you, you can start to plan a day that gives you time to accomplish the BIG ROCKS you must tackle in order to move the needle forward in your work. It’s a lot less stressful to do things that take a 90-minute lunch break to both exercise and eat.?

Accomplishing your priorities each day is critical to feeling “OK” with unplugging for work and focusing on your self-care and exercise. Getting caught up in email chains, and other peoples' requests that aren't part of your priorities can add up to countless hours each and every week.?
It's OK to say no when you know what you need to focus on each day, and getting those priorities on a daily planner is a great first step.?
