That time of the year!??

That time of the year!??

That time of the year when resolution posts and vision boards starts to pour in your social media handles. With hashtags of #Newyear #Newme!

Honestly, 1 January never feels like new year to me. Instead I have always felt April as the month of new beginnings.

If you think, my bias for seasons is speaking,

Believe me when I say, I absolutely love winters! Hot chocolates, boots, coats, that adrenaline rush of getting into blankets. But January 1 feels like just another one of these chilly days.

Historically, new year was celebrated around March to April according to Julian Calendar. In 1582, France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar and January 1 was declared the first day of the New Year instead of Easter and those who clung to the old date were “April Fools. While the exact origin of April Fools’ Day is debatable, the idea of new beginnings in spring feels more natural.

Think about it:

  • Our new sessions in school used to start in April.
  • our financial and business cycles start in April.
  • The nature transcends from chilly cold winters nights into longer days with much needed warmth and we feel lively and energetic!

( I did some research, to see if I'm the only one to feel this, turns out NO!)

There is a whole “April Theory” along with some astrological explanation behind this :

The astrological year begins with the Aries season which is also known as the month of April. Aries is the baby of Zodiac so it has a childlike, jolly energy hence we feel similar shift in our energy. Coof stuff right here!

Even today in different parts of the world new year is celebrated during different time of the year according to historical and traditional customs.

Chinese New Year, between January 21 and February 20, celebrates renewal with dragon dances and family reunions. While Jewish New year, Rosh Hashanah, in September, is marked by the blowing of the Shofar. Both the months are poles apart. So that means perfect milestone date or time is just an illusion!

Does it matter if you start following what you want to do on 1 Jan or 29 Jan?

Does it matter if you start studying at 10 a.m. of 10:27 a.m.?

A big NO

But we are obsessed with perfection and symmetry, hence 10 a.m. and 1 Jan is always preferred. "Well, nothing in life is perfect", right? We have heard this thousands of times the key is to just start. Mark your own new year be it 3 April or 21 september or 5th January!

Happy New Year!
