That time of the year

That time of the year

It is that time of the year where we see people changing houses, moving jobs, cities and relationships either get firmer or are held loose at workplaces - such is the importance of this time of the year.

?This is the Year end & calls for people managers and leaders to land messages on how the teams performed against the targets, what little did they miss or how much did they achieve.

?It may not be an easy solution of evaluation as it is not an arithmetic calculation of promoting someone in a role, giving a job enlargement or a salary raise. It is one of the toughest jobs of clearly segmenting skills, efforts & behaviors of people who work with us. This time of the year or Career Wellbeing has shown to have maximum impact on people’s lives https://www.gallup.com/394424/indicator-employee-wellbeing.aspx

?It is exhaustive exercise to create a tandem between the account of the last year and forecast of the one that lies ahead of us. Here are a few tips for managers and leaders to support them in landing messages?& information in a more understandable & truthful manner:-

  • Keep an extremely tight check on how the year end will look like if the year on balance sheet does not look that great as compared to the objective achievement of your people. Rationale is never too old fashioned !
  • We all love that team member/s but repetitive marginal performance if leading to cost escalation – calls for decision!?Do not fear taking that decision in time as opposed to destroying the options for people to perform where they actually belong to
  • Be affirmative in your message, land it very clearly & in a manner which can be understood by a 6 year old as well – do not assume or complicate when simpler suits most of the human generation
  • Budgeting, being cost savvy is so important – if you have for whatever reason not complied to it in the past year, make sure you hear your teams for the coming years & make necessary adjustments – remember we are talking about “People” and not commodities on an index
  • Most important ! Be mindful of people’s state of mind, be sensitive about it and predict how they must feel or behave after you have spoken. Preparation of a narrative is my top recommendation.?
  • Showcase the listening skills - summarize what they have said round the year & re affirm that you are an active listener who pays attention.

There is no right or wrong way when it comes to dealing with people as it is unique to each, following Maslow’s hierarchy may help coming closer to the objective of doing it better than before and being a Leader that co-creates healthy workplaces.

Please share if you have tips that have worked very well or went southwards for you during this time of the year.
