Time to Write a New Story | January Mastermind
I visited my mom in Pennsylvania over the holidays.
While this is a normal thing for families to do, our history is a checkered one.
I left home at 18. Out of self preservation. I grew up in a home of domestic violence and financial insecurity. I wanted better. There were very specific scripts for Indian immigrant kids. I wasn't a willing actor.
I was very clear on the first 49 years of my life. As I turn 50 next year, I am thinking actively about the next chapter. Who do I need to become to achieve goals for the next 50?
?? In my leadership journey, I want to show up with more grace. I've always been a very emotional person, prone to anger quickly. Today, I have committed to a daily meditation and exercise practice, so I show up with more calm and control.
?? I want to spend more time thinking, and less time reacting. In my career in television, I was rewarded for and expected to be --responsive. And, for many many years, I was that person. But, as a leader today, I want to be more like Einstein: “Spend?55 minutes thinking and five minutes doing, responding, acting.”
?? I want to write a new story. My younger brother has toggled in and out of the federal prison system 5 times since he was 21. When I went home, my mother shared that he had turned things around and started a business, doing odd jobs and dealing in sports paraphernalia. It gave me pause. I have been attached to so many stories of struggle and hardship. But, its time to let those stories go. Like my brother, I want to write a new story.
