Time Well-Spent: The Power of an Inspired Workforce

You might not guess this about a person who spends so much of his day helping his company navigate matters related to people, culture and how we operate as a workplace, but I’m big on numbers. I love stats, numerical facts and figures, and I’m an avid consumer of all the data I can get my hands on.
For the sake of this conversation, there’s one number in particular I’d like to focus on for a moment:
90,000
What does that figure represent? The average word count of a corporate presentation? The number of CHRO’s it takes to change a light bulb?
Not exactly. It’s the number of hours the average person will spend at work between the ages of 20 and 65. Astonishing, I know. But more astonishing is the conventional view that we as employees can or should be willing to spend those hours simply generating a paycheck; doing work that isn’t connected to who we are, what we believe in, what we’re passionate about or what moves us personally.
In my view, that time, or as much of it as possible, should be spent doing something meaningful.
At Mastercard, we deliver innovation that changes the world for the better – by creating pathways to inclusion, enabling dignity of choice and delivering amazing experiences for customers globally. This puts us in the enviable position of being able to offer our employees the opportunity to do purpose-driven work as part of their careers.
As we work to develop new ways to connect people to what truly matters and give the world access to faster, simpler and more secure digital payments, we push the boundaries of what is possible. What’s more, we do it with a passion and sense of purpose that you can see in the people who work here.
We believe in being a force for good. We believe that creating inclusive opportunities for all is the way to do business. We believe these things are central to how we succeed as a company.
This is the power of an inspired workforce. It’s a force multiplier and a difference-maker that helps us attract top talent, grow our base of customers, serve as a problem-solving partner to governments and create brand affinity with consumers and businesses globally.
As a global community of high-performing employees who innovate using their hearts and minds, Mastercard people are helping create a sustainable future for all. Our employees are leading efforts that genuinely make a difference in the world and help real people.

It might not be a bad way to spend your next 90,000 hours.

6 年To be honest I clicked on this article because of the image of Lego bricks:). I'm glad I did as it contains a provocative thought about just how long we all spend at work and the inspiring call to create great cultures through "doing well by doing good". I'm sure Ryan McCarty?would agree!
