It is time that we start caring again!

It is time that we start caring again!

The other day, I was asked in a post, "why don't people care?"

Here was my response:

We don't see people.

We see names and avatars.

We see SMS messages and posts that we leave a ?? or a ?? and believe we have communicated.

We ghost each other instead of breaking up with people face to face.

We have weaponized the flag.

We judge people based on who they voted for in the last election.

We accept job offers, never show up and think it is ok.

We find another job because it is easier than telling our boss we are unhappy.

AND THE LIST GOES ON!

Because we are not in front of each other anymore, we are losing our ability to be human and humane.

The digital world has given us so much. It has allowed us a more global perspective, greater opportunity and mobility, efficiencies of scale, greater effectiveness and increased profitability.

The challenges are that it has also led to disassociation, disenfranchisement, lower self-esteem, increased anxiety and loneliness.

Because many of us are now living our lives asynchronously, we have lost the ability to connect and increased our opportunity to misunderstand and mistrust.

Emails go unanswered.

Text messages are short and terse when they should not be.

Zoom chats have because all businesses trying to jam as many of them into a day as possible.

And social media has become toxic and far from social.

So what is the answer?

We need to make time to get to know people on a human level. To listen to their hopes, wants, needs, desires and fears and look at it not as time wasted but as an opportunity to build bridges, trust and understanding.

We need to realize that different people think, act, react and believe differently than we do, and that does not make them wrong or evil; it just means that they have a different perspective and understanding of a situation.

We need to stop thinking of the world as black and white and celebrate all the shades of grey in between. Realizing that the nuances matter and enable us to create better together.

None of us will change the world; however, each of us can affect the world around us.

Great share ???? Ben. That's why I always say get to know people, including your team, as individuals first, find out what makes them tick, their concerns, fears, etc.....Yes, in other words, show that you CARE! Thanks!

Care. Sounds soft and fluffy. It’s not. It’s hard. It requires you to be vulnerable. I write about change because I care. I care about change experiences being the best they can be for those experiencing them. I ask questions because I care that teams get to the nub of the issue and don’t pussyfoot around. Caring. When experiencing lack of care we feel angry and upset. Kindness attracts kindness
