Time to Upgrade Your Operational Process?
Corey Harlock
Partnering with small businesses and empowering owners to achieve their goals, develop strong leadership teams, and build the businesses they envision
Your operational process or playbook is the key to winning in business and sport.
Are you playing in the minor leagues or the big leagues?
With the return of football, I wanted to compare your business with football.
Firstly, as we move forward,
- The coaching staff will represent your leadership team
- The playbook will represent your operational process.
We’ll start with High School Football.
At this level, the coaching staff is lean and doesn’t have a lot of resources. They are more of a boot-strapped organization.
Therefore, the playbook or operational process they design is very basic or simple. The team doesn’t have a lot of sophistication or capacity to learn or execute a complex playbook.
The next level is College Football
The coaching staff is larger. Our leadership team and organization are growing.
Therefore, the playbook or operating systems is more complex. The players or teams have the capacity to deliver at a higher level.
In addition, there are thousands of high school coaches and hundreds of college coaches. In other words, not every high school coach has the capacity or desire to advance to the college level. Similarly, not all players have the desire, talent, or capacity to play at the college level. Only the best of the best move up.
Finally, we have the NFL Football
Firstly, the organization is huge, and the leadership team is vast. You have department heads, assistants, supervisors, administration, etc.
Secondly, the playbook or operational process is very deep and complex. The team has the capacity to execute at a high level.
Similarly, there are hundreds of college coaches and there are only dozens of NFL coaches. Not all college coaches have the desire or capacity to move up to the NFL level. And, not all college players have the desire or capacity to move up to the NFL.
How does upgrading my operational process apply to my business?
If you are operating at the high school level and you want to transition to the next level, you need to bring in new leaders. Leaders with the capacity that create a deeper, more effective playbook for your operation.
The coaching staff at the college level are different from the coaching staff at high school.
Similarly, the same applies if you want to make the jump to the NFL. As you grow, you’ll need to develop a more complex and effective operational system. To do that, you’ll need to look outside of your operation to find that capacity and experience.
In conclusion, what got you here doesn’t always get you there. If your business is stuck, it could be that your coaching staff or leadership team is stuck operating at a certain level and they don’t have the capacity to develop the playbook or operational process your business needs to grow.
