Once again, we awaken to find ourselves shocked and distraught over lives lost to violence.
Violence never solves problems. It may cover them up temporarily because of the fear it is intended to inspire, but it is part of a cycle, not the end of a cycle.
We honor and grieve for the police officers who lost their lives in Dallas. But we will deeply mourn each life lost during this week of tragedy, whether in Dallas, Baton Rouge, St. Paul?—?or in too many other cities in America.
As we confront the horrific slaughter of police officers in the line of duty, we must see it in the context of our civil society and use our horror and repugnance to redouble our commitment to justice.
We must do more than mourn. We must honor the lives lost by committing ourselves fully to creating the changes we need to end this cycle of tragedy.
We must transform the relationship between police and the communities they serve.
We must stand against the forces of hate and division that will surely seek to exploit this moment and cause further harm.
We must find a way to turn the pain of these tragedies into a powerful force for unity, transformation and healing.
