I guess I’ve tried reading pretty much all kinds of fiction genres.

But no matter how hard I try, I keep coming back to the one genre that always seems to get my juices flowing the most.

Crime.

From clever, cosy, bloody, scary, pulpy, hardboiled, soft-boiled, old, or new. To hi-tech, low-tech, British, foreign, whodunnit, and procedural.

Believe me, I’ve tried them all.

Some I’ve loved right from the first page. Others I’ve found hard-going right up until the last one. But I kept the faith, right up until the last word.

I remember the first crime novel I read. It was called Red Harvest.

It was by a guy called Dashiell Hammett.

He wrote, amongst others, The Maltese Falcon. You might have heard of it, or even seen the movie.

Reading it was like sliding in a key that unlocked a door.

On the other side of the door was a long line of crime writers.

Waiting to come in.

Some walked confidently over the threshold. Others didn’t even wait for an invite. They just kicked the damned door down and made a bee-line for the drinks cabinet.

I guess you could say it was love at first sight.

Anyway…that was then. Way back when crime took place in black and white.

This is now.

When death is par for the course, and the colours are black and blue and very red.

And now, I have my own debut crime novel, just about to kick its own door down and hit the shelves on the way in.
