Time travel of famous Dutch paintings

I have the privilege of living in Hollands oldest city Dordrecht, the home of many famous Dutch painters including Ary Scheffer, Ferdinand Bol, Albert Cuyp and temporary Vincent van Gogh. Some of the paintings we’re so accurate, one can combine them with a contemporary photo taken from the same position as the painter! That's what my neighbor and artist, Menno van der Weerd did with several 400 year old paintings.
'Gezicht op Dordrecht' from around 1655, Albert Cuyp
The print ‘Gezicht op Dordrecht’ is a combination of the same painting from around 1655 by Albert Cuyp and contemporary photographs. Menno van der Weerd made these from the same position where Albert Cuyp made his sketches for the painting, on the dike at the river crossing in Papendrecht of the Noord, Beneden Merwede and the Oude Maas.
About the artist
A(e)lbert Jacobszoon Cuyp (Dordrecht 1620-1691) was a landscape painter of a renowned artist gender from Dordrecht.
Cuyp developed his own rich style. He is known for its colorful characters and animals and often, rich color palettes. Landscapes are bathed in a sunny, Mediterranean light, although he never was in Italy. His moody river scenes, including the famous Gezicht op Dordrecht, showing just a superb use of matt colors, which are associated with Dutch landscapes. His last works date from 1665.
His work is in British and American collections, the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum as well as in the Dordrecht Museum.

The frigate Brielle on the Maas in Rotterdam
The print is a combination of a painting by Ludolf Backhuysen in 1689 and contemporary photographs. Menno van der Weerd photographed these from the same position where the artist drew his sketches for the painting, currently the Wilhelmina Pier, near Hotel New York.
De Brielle, a fifty gun equipped warship of the Admiralty of Rotterdam, is shown in the center. On the stern is a crowned medallion with the portrait of William III, flanked by the arms of England and Scotland. Below the climbing lion, the arms of the Generality. On the mainmast the Prince's Flag with a split pennant.
The yacht sailing on the right of the VOC (possibly the prince and his wife Mary aboard) fires a salute. There are two sloops, one with a flag of the States-General of the Netherlands. On the left sails a ketch, boeier, poon (sailing cargo ship) and a barge. On the right is also a coastal vessel and a yacht.
About the artist
Ludolf Backhuysen (Emden 1630 or 1631 - Amsterdam, 1708) was a German-born Dutch Golden Age painter of seascapes.
About Backhuysen we are told that he was often on the water during bad weather to closely watch the effect of the weather on the sky and water.
With its emphasis on atmosphere and light and dark contrasts, he is often seen as a forerunner of romanticism. He painted many rough seas, but also views of harbors and numerous important events of the Dutch maritime history.

Arrival of an important Society at Rotterdam
The print is a combination of a painting from about 1670 of painter Lieve Verschuier from Rotterdam. He probably made the sketches for the painting from a boat on the river Maas. The integrated photos are - at about the same position - taken from William Bridge.
It is unknown what kind of group is being welcomed with a guard of honor at the pier and a gun salute from the ship.
Far right is the Oude Hoofdpoort (Old Main gate), located next to the original entrance of the Oude Haven. More to the left the Boompjes and in the distance the mills of the Leuvehaven.
About the artist
Lieve Verschuier (Rotterdam ca. 1634-1686) was the son of the sculptor Pieter Cornelis Verschuier, who worked for the Admiralty of Rotterdam. Lieve initially followed his father into his profession, but later moved to Amsterdam. He lived there for some time and was probably in the doctrine of the painter Simon de Vlieger.
Around 1655 Verschuier traveled to Italy and returned one year later to Rotterdam. In 1674 he was appointed as a sculptor and painter of the Admiralty of Rotterdam. In 1678 he was elected as head of the guild of St. Lukas from the stonemasons in Rotterdam.
None of his carvings are preserved. Known works of his paintings are to do with shipping, including parades, ships on the roads, whaling and the arrivals of royalty.

Lenticular printing
A special optical effect is given in a lenticular print in which the old painting is combined with a recent photo. By changing the view angle (f.i. with your hands) the picture changes between the old painting and recent photo. The current city suddenly appears in the painting!
For very large prints, this effect appears for example through walking by.
Minimum quantities
Because of the high development costs lenticular printing can only be printed in larger quantities. There is a minimum amount of +/- € 3000.

What is lenticular?
Lenticular printing is a technology in which a lenticular lens is used to enable to change the image when viewed from different angles.
