Is it time to transition to Heat Pumps?

As we head towards a future that prioritises sustainability, one question we ask ourselves: How quickly should we move from gas to heat pumps in commercial buildings? This talk of change is guided by the new regulatory requirements and benefits that happen through increased efficiency and comfort.

But do you think this change is a priority now?

In this article, we are going to share why we think this change is a priority and why it should be done now.

Why Now?

Since April 2023, commercial properties must have a minimum EPC rating of E to be legally let. This means that buildings with an EPC rating of F or G are now considered ‘substandard’, and landlords cannot continue to lease them without making energy efficiency improvements or registering an exemption.

Currently, around 18% of commercial properties fall within the ‘F and G’ EPC brackets. In London, with as many as 80% of office buildings rated C or below.

This means there is a short timeframe for businesses to act. It is therefore important that building owners start budgeting for necessary upgrades ahead of the deadline.

What’s the advantage of changing now?

By switching to heat pumps there is an opportunity to remove centralised heating and cooling plant, fossil fuel heating systems and improve the building efficiency. Heat pumps are known for their ability to provide both heating and cooling, allowing reductions in energy consumption and lowering operational costs.

With employee and tenant satisfaction being high on the agenda, heat pumps offer more advantages by allowing occupants greater control over their heating and cooling systems, whilst operating independently from the rest of the building.

By implementing this change now, we believe that you can reach the required EPC ratings quicker. Heat pumps are highly efficient, offering reductions in energy consumption to operate. Installing heat pumps in buildings will reduce cost, improve energy efficiency, and lower carbon emissions.
