I know I normally send these on a Saturday, but as it's the new year and its the first full week back I thought I would send you this today, as I went dark during the holidays. Hope you like, have happy new year and even more amazing 2025
The holidays are over, the decorations are packed away (hopefully), and now it’s time for the real deal: the first proper week back at work. No more holiday auto-replies or lingering leftovers. It’s time to jump back in, and if you’re feeling a mix of excitement and dread, you’re not alone.
But let’s reframe this week. Instead of seeing it as a grind, let’s treat it as an opportunity—a fresh start to reconnect, refocus, and set the tone for the year ahead. And for professional speakers, communicators, or anyone who wants to inspire and connect with others, this week is your stage.
Here’s how to make this first full week back count:
1. Start with Your Message for the Week
Every great speech begins with a clear message—and so should your week. What’s your focus for the next five days? Maybe it’s collaboration, clarity, or creativity. Write it down. For example: “This week, I’ll focus on being proactive in meetings.” Let this message guide your actions, so you stay intentional rather than reactive.
2. Listen Before You Speak
The first week back is full of conversations, so start with listening. Ask your team or colleagues open-ended questions like, “What’s one thing you’re excited about this week?” or “What do you see as our biggest opportunity?” Listening doesn’t just build trust—it gives you insights that make your communication sharper and more relevant.
3. Sharpen Your Professional Presence
This is the week to dust off your professional energy. Whether you’re in-person or on Zoom, take a moment to reset your presence before every meeting. Sit tall, breathe deeply, and speak with clarity and intention. A strong presence isn’t just about looking confident—it’s about showing others you’re ready to lead the way forward.
4. Share Stories to Reconnect
A lot has happened since your last proper week of work—holidays, travel, or even just funny moments with family. Share a quick, lighthearted story with your colleagues or clients to break the ice and humanize the transition back to work. For example, “I learned over the holidays that assembling toys is harder than public speaking!” Stories build rapport and make you more approachable.
5. Experiment with a New Skill
The first week back is a great time to test new communication techniques. Try asking more questions in meetings, use metaphors to explain ideas, or experiment with pausing to emphasize key points. Starting the year with a mindset of growth keeps your work fresh and engaging—for you and your audience.
6. Treat the Week Like a Workshop
Let’s be honest: no one’s expecting perfection the first week back, and that’s freeing! Use this week to practice and refine your skills. Did you stumble over your words in a meeting? That’s okay—it’s a chance to improve. Did your presentation run long? Think about where you could tighten it up next time. Treat the week as your personal rehearsal space.

7. Close Each Day with a Win
Like any great presentation, the way you end your day matters. At the close of each workday, take five minutes to reflect: What went well? Maybe you asked a thoughtful question, connected with a colleague, or even just stayed focused through a tough meeting. Celebrate those small wins—they’re what build momentum for the rest of the week.
The first proper week back at work doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Think of it as your opening act—a chance to set the tone for the year ahead. With a clear message, strong presence, and a little curiosity, you’ll turn this week into one to be proud of.
