Civil Engineering, Construction & Surveying Recruitment - Australia and New Zealand
As a civil engineer, you might be pondering whether now is the right time to make the leap from New Zealand to Australia.
Since the new government took office in New Zealand, there have been significant changes and challenges in the country's infrastructure sector. Many projects from the previous government have been paused or canceled, such as Auckland Light Rail, Let’s Get Wellington Moving and the iReX (Interislander ferry and terminals).
"Globally, New Zealand’s negative infrastructure outlook is at odds with much of the rest of the world (including Australia) which is seeing an overall confidence uptick (with the notable exception of China) according to the RICS Global construction sentiment index." (Deloitte).
There has been a mixed response to NZ Government's plan for land transport over the next decade, and many contractors are downsizing as they are waiting for more clarity on how, when and where the infrastructure work programme will be delivered.
In the meantime Australia is experiencing a surge in infrastructure projects and a high demand for skilled professionals.
The New Zealand Government has just announced it will increase visa charges across all categories as of 1 October 2024. Migrants applying for the skilled residence category will be charged $6450, up from $4290 currently. Partners applying for residency will see their fees climb to $5360, up from $2750. ??
