No time for studying anymore!

No time for studying anymore!

Look around you, wherever you go all the people are on their smartphones. Doing what? Most of the time they are navigating through their social media, either sharing something new, updating their location, or simply seeing what other people are doing. This phenomenon includes all ages, including teenagers and kids.

If the time spent for any kid on a daily basis is as follows:

  • 8 hours at school.
  • 10 hours of sleep.
  • 2 hours for daily routines (Food, Talk, Bath..etc).
  • 1 hour play time.
  • 2 hours for outdoor activity, TV or browsing the internet and mainly social media.

That is a total of 23 hours. This leaves 1 hour as a best case for studying. I still think that these figures are too optimistic. If these figures are 80% accurate, this means that there is no enough time to study!

This is the problem, so what is the solution?

I think that educational systems should take advantage of the new user behavior on the internet. Kids are using social media on a daily basis and statistics indicate that this behavior is going to continue. Some of the reasons are:

  • The smartphones and tablets are being more available and cheaper.
  • Data packages are becoming cheaper and more accessible.
  • Acceptable age of owning a smart device is decreasing.
  • Acceptable age for accessing the internet and social media is decreasing (As an example, by Instagram policy kids at the age of 13 can have an account.)

Did you know that: 94% Of Teenagers Use Facebook, Have 425 Facebook Friends, But Twitter & Instagram Adoption Way Up (Source: marketingland)

Keeping this in mind and knowing that the social media is an unstoppable wave and at the same time is a lifestyle. Educational systems need to be part of it and maybe drive a big part of it. Can you image how fun can this be to students? Why can’t studying be as fun as using facebook, or instagram? Can’t the kid with high grades be socially popular?

Many questions that need answers and if the educational institutes don’t think this through now, very soon they will be obliged to do so.

What do you think? Can’t we create a fun social media educational system?

I honestly think schools and universities will eventually become absolute with knowledge so easily accessible, question is how to motivate the kids to seek it and your idea to usel social media is perfect!

I was under the impression and hoping that the 8 hours they spend at school includes some studying!
