Time to Step into Your Own Shoes

A friend confided in me this past week that she’s a little anxious heading back to the office and networking events because she feels so emotionally and physically different from 16 months ago. “After wearing my slippers constantly and gaining a bit of weight, my shoes don’t even fit anymore!”?As you move into more in-person business and social settings, here are some ways to polish your personal brand, re-establish communication norms, and step back into what's right for you.??

Look the part: Whether one-on-one, small or large groups or even media interviews, what you communicate with your physical presence really matters. Choose trimmed, current and styled hair and make-up to instantly boost how you show up. Make sure your clothes are well-fitting, stylish and have a bit of memorable flair. For guys: socks, ties, glasses, and shoes are fabulous ways to stand out.?Your look can increase your influence in measurable and priceless ways.

Increase eye contact:?When you’re in person, you no longer have to pretend you’re looking at someone while you’re really looking at your computer camera lens. Without staring down people, holding your own and not being afraid to intentionally use eye contact will only help your brand. Growing a presence that includes intentional eye contact also boosts the overall reputation and day-to-day mechanisms of your organization. When leaders use and model strong eye contact, the subtextual message reads as transparency and cements how this type of behavior is expected from others in your work environment.

Watch Your Tone: Your tone is the personality of your voice. Does your tone communicate frustration, pessimism, condescension or approachability? As a leader, you want to intentionally control your vocal behavior. I suggest you do an energy check before any meeting or important phone call. If you need to boost your positive vibe, do a Power Pose or listen to a high-energy favorite song for 30 seconds to help you show up as the best version of yourself. When you sound approachable and powerful, your intended message has the best chance of landing well with your audience.

Say what you want to say: Own your zones of expertise. Or as I like to say, “Own your WOW!” If you don’t, how can you expect others to take you seriously or feel comfortable with your leadership? Offer your valuable perspective with an open mind and heart, understanding it may be challenged. Showcase your abilities and willingness to benefit the group and organization. The last thing you want is a reputation for never speaking up. Real world credibility can only grow through your intention and ability to share. Your advice is a valuable gift put forth for the overall good. When you share, and successful outcomes follow, you know how that feels.

Do what makes sense to you:?Refrain from the handshake. Elbow bump if you prefer. Wave if that feels better.?Feel free to decline invitations where you don’t feel comfortable. Pass on the buffet, a shared plate of food, or tasting someone’s drink. Head to the gym when you’re ready and very soon you’ll be confidently stepping into your own shoes--whatever size they may be.?
