Sebene Selassie grounds us in a radical present
We all live our lives with some sense of a deadline. A lot of us are fortunate enough to feel confident in the promise of what we call a long life: maybe 80 or 90 great years. But of course, life isn’t predictable. Everything can change in an instant. And we can’t really think about using our time well unless we factor in this idea that we can’t be sure of how much of it we even have.
How would you live your life if you knew it might have a? limit? Today’s guest, Sebene Selassie, is a lifetime student of Buddhism, and a gifted teacher. Sebene was pretty young when her life took on an urgent question: at 34, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Says Sebene: "There's nothing that'll put a fire under your butt to practice more than a cancer diagnosis."
One’s early 30s can be a time of great pressure even in the best of circumstances. People around us often begin to pair off, and to have kids. Careers take off. And we’re left feeling the pressure that comes with having lots of choices—and being told we need to decide. Time is running out! Now, add a cancer diagnosis into this mix.??
Sebene’s diagnosis inspired her to dive deeper into her meditation practice, and to embrace teaching. Nearly two decades later, Sebene is still living with her cancer, and she has a lot of wisdom to share with us. You can find the episode here, or listen directly below:?
