Time to roll up your sleeves and start building stuff! Why Outcome-Based Training fits with AI

I’ve been in the training industry for close to 25 years and during that time I feel like I’ve seen and heard it all. ?November 30th 2022 changed the game (and that was a little over 2.5 years since COVID changed the game).

The launch of ChatGPT created a boom in a technology. A colossal boom. ?

Adoption of ChatGPT in real numbers was achieved in record time and since then there are more and more LLM’s (Large Language Models) to choose from (Claude, Gemini, Llama etc...

The rapid change of pace in the evolution of AI as a technology has however created a problem;? if new releases, models, tools and products are released every week how the heck do we keep up with learning how to use all this?

COVID did us a favor

Now bare with me… COVID did us one favour and that was to force the training market into a more mature approach to virtual / off premise training and made access to training far easier and subsequently democratic.

...and then it didn't

The downside was that that OPM’s (Online Program Management); the Coursera’s, Udemy’s etc.. filled the gap whilst the traditional learning providers (including higher ed) changed their operating strategy (slowly), and people flocked in their millions to get access to thousands of online courses.

Course completion rates;? around 10%.? Proof that people actually learned anything?? ????

Back to the problem

-????????????? AI is changing the world and everyone needs to get on board.

-????????????? Its evolving so fast that its hard to keep up with what you need to know.

-????????????? Human brains capacity for knowledge is the same / limited.

So lets think about...

How we learn best

Research in adult learning emphasizes that we retain more information and develop stronger skills when we engage actively with “material”, whether that be through problem-solving, role-playing, or simulations. We basically tap into our innate learning methods from childhood. Babies didn’t read a manual or listen to their parents when learning how to walk or use a spoon.

Example; how much longer does it take you to learn a new route by heart when driving from A to B in comparison to pre-SatNav systems? When you had to use a map and count the number of roads before you had to turn right, you engaged with the problem, rather than just be a passenger. Spoiler:? If you were born after the year 2000, this won’t make any sense – yes, we used to have big map books in cars.

Outcome-Based Training

Experiential learning is the most effective method of learning anything, and coupled with Outcome-Based Training; which basically focuses on what you will be able to do after your experiential learning event, rather than being told what you will learn during the event is the consideration you and your organizations need to make when deciding on learning strategies.

Hybrid Approach

Now, back to “time”. We’ve established that we need to learn a lot more, and that we need to do it more frequently. Experiential learning is a logical and effective way of learning, but what about “time”. Where do we fit all this in?

Throughout my career I have prototyped and brought to market learning concepts in the attempt to provide people and companies with the most effective learning experience that they need at that time, so I know a thing or two about the over-utilized and often abused definition of Blended Learning. True Blended Learning is like taking the best of different worlds and merging them together into a cohesive thing of its own and can help with the problem of time.

-????????????? On-Demand training is effective at providing short demonstrations of a subject.

-????????????? Live Instructor or coach based training is effective so that you interact and can ask questions to an expert.

-????????????? Experiential training will garner the concepts you learned in the on-demand part of the course and the guidance from the coach whilst applying all that in real time to your own scenario or project.

The result;? you will have performed activities or built something in a scenario which you have self-prescribed (increasing engagement) and which you will be able to use in different scenarios the second you walk out of the class!? O U T C O M E – B A S E D? T R A I N I N G.

What did I do?

A few months ago, I wanted to properly learn how to engineer prompts, how to assess outputs on whether they were good or bad, how to design and assess what could and should be automated, how to use no-code tools to build an automation, how to assess which LLM to use, what my automation would cost, and ultimately build something.

You can too. It takes 6 – 8 weeks.

The time commitment was 1.5 hours per week of time with coaches and the community of peers, plus 1-1 time with real (human) AI Coaches who you can book time with to get guidance and help on your project build. There’s a demo-day at the end, and I’ve since seen the projects that have been created; some of which are now being commercialized and truly impactful.

This sounds ******** amazing - when can I start!?

AI Academy has a new cohort of the Generative AI Project Bootcamp starting NEXT WEEK. We run our training in cohorts, because that means that we update the training every 6-8 weeks and include anything new from releases etc.. Find another company that does that.

So if you want to get in on the action and genuinely change your perspective on AI, DM me and I’ll guide you to the right place - but do it now.. Next week is.... next week!

If you also want to talk about all this, DM me and we’ll set something up; especially if you're reading and thinking "this sounds like it could help my organization" - because yeah, we help a bunch of those as well.
