Time to Restart, Retool, and Create Change!

Since my last newsletter over a year ago, much has changed, both for me and in the world! In June I concluded a successful three years at McGill University, helping the administration to increase faculty diversity and to develop new programs to ensure support for students, faculty and staff. I'm very proud of my work with these amazing women, Karen Diop , Antoinette Henry , and for the last year, as an associate dean working with Lisa S.

Antoinette and Karen who worked with me on McGill's Strategy to Address Anti-Black Racism.

There are too many people I would like to thank at McGill, I truly enjoyed my time there and it was very sad for me to leave Montréal. However, I am also excited to be starting my new position as Professor of Political Science at University of British Columbia, Vancouver.

I'm excited to be working with colleagues at UBC's Center for Migration Studies and I'm beginning work on a global research project we have tentatively titled PROGRAM: the Partnership for Research on Global Race and Migration. I'm also looking forward to being out of administration and into teaching and research again.

I have continued work on my next book, Reckoning: Creating Positive Change through?Radical Empathy that is forthcoming next summer with Bristol University Press and Policy Press . Most importantly, I have been looking at new ways to support leaders who understand that diversity is already here, and it is up to them to be inclusive leaders.

#RadicalEmpathy

I will be sharing my experience through this newsletter and offerings on my website. I encourage you to try out our new Inclusive Leader Assessment on my new web page that provides free resources for those interested in learning more about leading with Radical Empathy. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or needs along the way.

Over the past few years, even before the book Radical Empathy was published, I was able to work with some amazing folks, including the University of California Office of the President , my high school, Gonzaga Preparatory School , and many folks in my community, including Dave Norris of the Menlo Park Police Department and the Menlo Park City Council. I appreciate the opportunity I had to work with my sister Rhonda Brown , amazing entrepreneur Elisa Camahort Page , leadership maven Danielle Harlan, Ph.D. and empathy advocate Maria Ross who has a great new book. Despite the attacks on DEI work, the reality is that we all need to take action to ensure we understand our bias and create spaces at work and in our communities where all feel welcome.

I'm very grateful for all of the folks who have come to appreciate the radical empathy approach. If you are new to the idea, I encourage you to check out the book, and try out the assessment or download the free materials I provide on my website.
