Time to Reset and Self Assess

The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes - William James

When it comes to making important decisions or setting goals, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of reaching the destination without first assessing our current situation. This can leave us feeling lost, like being thrown out into the ocean without a plan or the tools to reach safety. To avoid this, the first thing we need to do is assess our current state. Are we okay? Do we have the skills we need? What resources are available to us?

Taking the time to reflect on where we stand is crucial before starting any journey, personal or professional. This involves assessing our skills, knowledge, and resources, as well as identifying potential distractions or limiting mindsets and behaviors that may hold us back. By taking this self-assessment, we may realize that we already have the tools we need to reach our destination or know where to go to acquire the skills.

One of the most critical aspects to consider when assessing our current situation is our strengths and weaknesses. Knowing what we're good at and what we need to work on can help us identify areas where we need to improve. Additionally, reflecting on our past accomplishments can help us understand what we're capable of and where our passions lie.

It's also essential to evaluate our resources, including time, money, and support systems, to determine what is realistic and achievable for us. For example, if we have little time, we may need to set shorter-term goals or focus on something that doesn't require as much time commitment. Similarly, if we have limited financial resources, we may need to look for affordable ways to achieve our goals.

In addition to assessing our skills, knowledge, and resources, it's crucial to identify potential distractions or limiting mindsets and behaviors that may hold us back. These can include things like procrastination, perfectionism, and self-doubt. By recognizing these distractions, we can try to overcome them and move forward with our goals.

Lastly, understanding what is important to us in life is crucial. By identifying our values, we can make decisions and set goals that align with them. For example, if freedom and independence are most important, we may choose a career path that offers more flexibility and control over our schedule.

Before setting off on any journey, personal or professional, taking the time to assess our current situation is essential. This includes identifying our skills, knowledge, resources, and potential distractions or limiting mindsets and behaviors that may hold us back. By understanding what is important to us and regularly checking in on our progress and re-evaluating our situation, goals, and priorities, we can set a clear GPS target and navigate towards our desired destination with a greater sense of direction and purpose.

The Next Right Move for the Day:

Think: Reflect on where you are currently in your life and identify is this where you want to be. What specifically is working and not working? Are you happy?

Feel: Connect emotionally to any blocks you have. Let the emotions that come up answer why these distractions hold you back.

Do: Take immediate action by creating a check-in process to use as you move toward your bigger goals.

Say: “Before I can determine where I’m going, I have to assess where I’m currently at.”

Great post Coach AK Ikwuakor. I fully agree with taking time to think out the process. It's also helpful to consider what may be blind spots, created by our individual false beliefs, before setting off on the next journey. PS: I have had many interesting conversations about dark room therapy over the past week. Thanks for the introduction to the concept via your posts. Enjoy your next journey!
