Time for a reset?
The acronym VUCA, first deployed nearly four decades ago, amply describes today’s state of socio-political affairs – volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. This is because of a dynamic risk complex where multiplying threats expose growing vulnerabilities. It demands we adapt our responses. Accordingly, security on the grand scale needs to undergo a paradigm shift. Whether that shift is sufficient or swift enough to meet the challenges, only time will tell.
This article looks at the pressures under a new US presidency and how the primacy of security can be maintained by others in unstable times. That security needs to be built around four main parameters, namely flexibility, resilience, preparation and mobilisation.
