A Time To Renew The Promise

So my son asks, Dad what do we celebrate on International Women's Day? What indeed!!?
To start with we celebrate the success of so many wonderful women around us who cancelled out some daunting challenges to claim some astonishing wins. That's what you see mostly.
But more that a celebration this day is a reminder of a promise to all of us.
A promise to take action and bring women back as our equal partners - personally and professionally. Because somewhere in our history we left them behind. We continue to pay a heavy price for doing it. In leaving them behind we also left behind that innate human considerations of love, compassion and empathy in our conquest for more.
It is a promise to systematically dispel all those biases that we have built against women at home and as an extension at our workplaces too. Somewhere we just conveniently boxed and labelled them. Now these biases are lodged so seamlessly into our thought flow and its scary to think they appear normal to a large section of people.
It is a promise to acknowledge and act on the truth, that women deserve equal pay for the equal work they do in this world.
It is also a reminder that there are still millions of women out there who have to fight for legitimate space, rights and sometimes even simple matters of life, that often come as granted for many others.
But of course, that is not what I said to my son. For his tender heart, I told him we are celebrating your mom. Who has put in hours, days and years - to make our house a beautiful home. Who brought you into this world buy putting her body through extreme circumstances and pain, and continues to give more in an effort to make a fine human being out of you. Who gives dad the support he needs to face the rollercoaster called life and reminds him that it is Ok for a man to cry and ask for emotional support. And she does all this .. every day, without pay or holiday. Son, we are celebrating her and so many others like her.
Happy International Women's Day to all the Wonderful Women.
