Time to Reinvent Your Career? Start With This 1 Thing...

42 percent of professionals surveyed at Work It Daily told us the number one reason they haven't made a career move is because they don't know what they want to do next. They feel trapped in their current careers with no clear way to pivot to something more satisfying.

Even worse, looking for work made them feel more defeated.

Many of those surveyed also admitted they had tried (unsuccessfully) to find a new career. They updated their resumes, logged tons of hours looking at and applying to jobs online, only to hear nothing back. This led them to believe A) there was something wrong with them, and B) changing careers was not possible. I can see where the lack of any response from employers might give a person that impression. But in my experience, this couldn't be further from the truth.

Career reinvention requires confidence (a lot of it)!

If finding your next career was easy, everyone would be doing it. While it's technically not as hard as finding a soul mate, finding a career that makes you feel satisfied and happy does take some work. And, you can't conduct a proper job search if you aren't rocking some serious confidence in your abilities. Which leads to this week's career lesson...

Our career confidence is only as good as our career story.

What's a career story? It's the narrative in your head that explains your career to yourself. As humans, we create these career stories as a way to justify what has happened to us. We base them on our interpretation of past events. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Which is exactly why so many people can't put career reinvention into motion. The very stories they create in their heads are the ones that make it impossible for them to see what's possible in the future. If you want to embark on a new career path, you need to reframe the story in your head so it can reveal new ideas and possibilities. It's also vital for getting your career confidence up so you can step out of your comfort zone and do what needs to be done to get that new job.

It's time to address the weak spots in your career story.

In the video training below, I teach you how to shift your career story by eliminating the negatives you've wrongly attached to it. I challenge you to take the time to listen and execute on this process as a way to improve the quality of your career story. Once you embrace the concepts in this training, you'll be surprised at how your mindset and focus will shift towards new and exciting possibilities.

P.S. - This article & video lesson are part of a new series with a goal to help 1,000,000 LinkedIn users grow their careers on the platform in 2020.

I am in the process of changing career, it's been difficult to build confidence in the new career even though I am fully aware that I can do the job, the process of job hunting too has been draining, I totally gave up. I just didn't know how to boost my confidence. This is very helpful. I look forward to more excellent tips J.T. O'Donnell

Thank you, J.T.! Riveting presentation; amazing advice. I just tuned in, so I haven't written out my story as you advise, but it rings true, nonetheless. I've had a long career myself, and in reflecting on my experiences, I can see the striking contrast between owning my experiences and reacting to them. I intend to take on the full exercise, but until then, the benefit is apparent before the exercise begins. I can imagine I'll have some eye-opening realizations about them.? Thanks again, J.T. Keep inspiring!

JT - I just came across your videos on rewriting my career story and the experience, learn & grow model. Very Interesting. I had a very tragic accident that totally redefined my life & career 25 years ago. As a result, I was forced to switch careers and have not been able to find a new career “identity” that works for me. Now, at 61 years old, I’m trying to change my career identity again. I’ll try your experience, learn & grow exercise to rewrite my career story. Thanks for the idea.
