Time to reflect - or time to deflect?
This time of year is often when we stop to reflect. Even it it's not our financial year end, there's something about a calendar year end which gives us pause for thought.
Gyms and diet businesses are built on the promise that we'll reflect right now and aim to put stuff right next year. And on the knowledge that we'll go on paying way after we stopped using them.
Buying a gym membership or cutting calories is rarely addressing the real problem, it merely deals with a symptom of it. Often only temporarily.
Change takes hard work, but more than that, it takes understanding and acknowledgement of the real problem. It takes reflection, not deflection.
It's the same with business growth
When you're responsible for growing your business - whether as a founder, CEO or full-time marketer - it's sometimes hard to really understand what's preventing growth and how to fix it.
Saying you're going to 'improve your personal brand' or do more podcasts or publish more articles isn't addressing the real problem. It's the same as starting the gym and realising by April that it's been 3 weeks since your last visit.
Business growth is hard and it's complicated. Just understanding what went well this year and what we could have done better is a challenge.
Honestly appraising our personal input is harder still. Some of us have a tendency to never blame ourselves, some of us (and the marketing mindset is particularly good at this) blame ourselves unnecessarily.
I get it. I've been there.
