Is It Time For a Raid?!
What if I told you that there’s a simple strategy you can utilize, TODAY, that will save you a lot of stress agita?
It’s a beautiful, windy day here on Long Island, and I just finished up my day in the field. After writing this to you, it’s cleaning and laundry time before heading to bed early due to having a very early day tomorrow. WHOOO!!!!
Now then, that simple strategy I mentioned…
Temptation is the root of all evil. I know that for a fact. I have a VERY addictive personality!
My comfort as a child was sugar. As an overweight pre-teen, my routine was simple: Wake up, eat a sugary cereal, go to school, come home, eat a milkshake within minutes of walking in the door, eat an incredibly starchy dinner, and end the night with a tall sugary glass of fat-free milk and a sleeve or two of Oreo’s.
Did I mention the sugar?
As an adult, I went through a very difficult period on my weight loss journey. I haven’t shared this with you before, but during my two year plateau, within a three month period, my girlfriend at the time and I broke up unexpectedly, I moved out of my parents’ place, and on the date the lease for my first apartment officially started, I was let go from my job. With a decent nest egg in the bank, I went into a tailspin, and began a trend of drinking heavily.
My days would go as follows: Wake up at 10 or 11 AM hungover, hydrate on the couch for a couple of hours with Sportscenter on in the background, walk down the street to pick up some Chinese or Greek food, and after the hangover passed, pouring another glass of Gentleman’s Jack and drinking until I passed out again.
Trust me, NOT a good look…
That being said, it was four or five months later when I met my current girlfriend and started to get my head out of my ass that I realized what I needed to do: AVOID ALL TEMPTATIONS!!!
Even with my limited nutritional knowledge at the time, I knew that all that drinking was no good, so I poured the rest of whatever was in the freezer down the sink, and threw it out. I got rid of all the junk, and started going to the grocery store again to prepare home-cooked meals. And would’t you know it: Within a couple of months, my buddy turned me on to the Paleo Diet, and my breakthrough on my weight loss journey commenced.
When I cut out both the foods and the substances that had significantly hindered my progress, it wasn’t easy to go cold turkey. The first few weeks were ridden with withdrawal symptoms — Aches, pains, sweats, nausea, dizziness, irritability… BUT, after that period passed, I no longer missed the booze. I didn’t miss the takeout. My body had ridden itself of the crap, and it didn’t feel the need to go back.
Fast forward to your life: You may live in a household with other people. Maybe it’s your spouse, maybe you have kids… Hell, maybe you still live with your parents! Whatever the case may be, not everyone in your household is going to go on your weight loss journey with you.
There may be temptations all over the place: In the fridge, in the cabinets, in the pantry…
The BEST way to stay on track is to AVOID TEMPTATION! Have a talk with your housemates, and tell them you’re going to be making some nutritional changes. Tell them that you’d appreciate it if they’d either hide or throw away the junk you used to snack on with them, as having it around you constantly will hinder your progress.
If they agree (and if they’re supportive of you, they will be), take a trash bag, go through the kitchen, and get all the crap in there. Throw it out, head to the grocery store, and stock up on some healthy foods!
How do you know if a food is healthy? Shop the periphery of the grocery stores. Avoid foods that are heavily packaged and have more than a few ingredients. Here are the two sentences I tell my clients to follow when making nutritional changes: “Eat meats, vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no (added) sugar. Eat ONLY when hungry, and just to satisfy — NOT to stuff your face.”
See how simple that is?! So if there’s junk in your household, do yourself a favor, and get it out right now. You’ll be sending me a ‘thank you’ email in a week when you’ve dropped four pounds, and your cravings for those foods are nominal at best.
Sincerely,
Pete Weintraub
