A Time to Pause & Give Thanks...
I?take a single bite of turkey every Thanksgiving, so my wife doesn’t turn the carving knife on me. I follow up with a strong, “mmm, that’s really good honey.” Make no mistake, during that bite all I am thinking is “why would anyone subject themselves to this torment?” I am, with every fiber of my being, a sides guy.?
?
Now, if you’re thinking, “Josh, turkey is the main attraction, the cornerstone of any proper Thanksgiving meal,” I’ll simply state that you’re entitled to your own opinion.? Even if it’s wrong.
?
However, I do have an Uncle Steve who would agree with you to a fault. He and I are diametrically opposed; he, almost exclusively, eats turkey at Thanksgiving.?
?
Rarely even using gravy to make it palatable, Uncle Steve proudly creates a traffic jam as plate passing comes to a halt while he shovels more turkey onto what I’ve come to call, “Mt. Gobble.” It’s a borderline crazy behavior that I believe should be punishable in a court of law.?
?
For years now I’ve made it my mission to guide Uncle Steve towards dish diversification. Countless hours spent laying out the clear benefits of green bean casserole, stuffing, mashed potatoes, any of which would be an obvious benefit, adding so much to his overall Thanksgiving experience. For years I have failed.?
?
That was until last year when my 9yo nephew took a large scoop of green bean casserole and dumped it unceremoniously onto his plate. Before he was able to protest, he looked him right in the eye and said, “I made that with mom.” Mob enforcers wish they could produce this level of coercion. It was a 1-move checkmate.?
?
At first Uncle Steve ate the casserole in a similar manner to my annual bite of turkey, begrudgingly and with significant hesitation. However, as he worked his way through the now rolling green hills at the foot of Mt. Gobble, to the surprise of everyone at the table, he found that he rather enjoyed it.?
He enjoyed it so much that it prompted him to continue to try other things.?Not everything was a home run, I mean how can you call cranberry “sauce” a sauce when it retains the shape of the can, but for the most part incorporating new elements onto his plate made the meal far less boring and much more satisfying.? He even allowed items to touch on the plate.?
