Time passing you by?
How's life, friend?
Are those icy mornings making your heart chilly in the face of what's coming?
Or can you feel the quickening under your feet as all your pursuits feed what's coming next?
I remember a time when things felt so very stuck and strange in my life.
I wasn't really performing anymore.
In fact, I didn't really want to.
It was the first time in my life when I just didn't care if I booked an acting role again.
I still loved acting but I didn't love the practice of it.
I was over the million little tasks that an acting career requires to maintain momentum.
And what was life without momentum?
Oooof.
It was a curious time, for sure.
But all that emptiness where hustling for auditions and worrying about my career exist felt so very empty.
So. Much. Space.
So I tapped back into some dreams I'd had over the years that I was just too busy to pursue.
~ I took Art History at the local community college.
~ I signed up for swimming lessons to learn strokes, instead of splashing.
~ I jumped into teacher training at my yoga studio based on a daydream I had one day.
None of it was connected to a key outcome, namely, getting an acting job.
It wasn't signing up for voice lessons in case they need me to sing.
It wasn't buying a dialect course online so I could switch vocal placements on a dime.
It wasn't another round of scene classes with a rotating list of acting teachers.
It was just me, exploring my curiosity.
And as luck would have it, an opportunity fell in my lap that I never saw coming.
My dear friend and frequent collaborator needed a director for his one-man show that I had been informally advising on.
We talked through options and no one seemed right....
Until he suggested that the right person might be....
Me.
I did not see that coming.
And truly, we had a blast collaborating on that piece.
~ Won awards.
~ Traveled the country.
~ Met so many lovely friends!

It was a delight to share my insights without putting on the greasepaint.
I kinda dug it.
And then, our friend the pandemic happened.
And our invitation to perform in Iceland was promptly rescinded by their government.
Thank you so very much.
Our new Nordic friends suggested a Zoom performance.
- But it didn't quit match the show.
My actor suggested we wait for 'things to blow over'.
- But waiting didn't feel right.
We even thought about prepping a different show to take instead.
- But we couldn't imagine leaving this project before its international debut.
So in a fit of otherworldly who-knows-what, I ventured, let's make a movie!
And the rest, my visionary kindreds, is history.
Suddenly all those months in Art History gave me images to visually reference as I gained camera skills.
That time in the pool gave me the precision and stamina to cram myself and my over six-foot-tall actor into the closet where we shot the entire film.
And that dedication to honoring many points of view that I honed while teaching yoga allowed me to see the evolving piece we were forging from several perspectives at once: director, cameraperson, audience, and on behalf of our playwright who was busy in front of the camera.
It was a lot to juggle but -
I was practiced at it from all the months I'd spent doing other things.
And as is so often the case, our bravery was rewarded.
And the best part of all?
It was so freaking fun.
I am telling you, it may not make sense
but
if it feels like a blast,
you probably should follow the impulse where it wants you to go.
The path may not be clearly defined but it's truly worth it.
warm wishes & cold cash,
Rhianna
