Laureles, Medellin, Colombia: The leader of the pack
Topping the 2023 list is Laureles, in Colombia’s bustling city of Medellin, hometown to musicians J Balvin and Karol G. Despite its famous nightlife street, La 70, and the Estadio Atanasio Girardot soccer stadium, Laureles maintains a laid-back reputation. Traditional fruit vendors still roam its streets, providing an authentic Colombian feel.
Smithfield, Dublin, Ireland: A blend of tradition and innovation
Smithfield in Dublin, Ireland, is the highest-ranked spot in Europe, where tradition meets innovation. The neighborhood is known for The Cobblestone, a historic pub, and home to traditional Irish music, along with new businesses like Third Space, a social enterprise café. It's a must-visit for those who appreciate post-industrial charm.
Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain: The SoHo of Madrid
Once a working-class area outside Madrid's ring road, Carabanchel is now the city's equivalent of SoHo. It's filled with trendy art galleries, creative spaces, and local joints like La Casa de los Minutejos, famous for its pig's ear tapas. Despite gentrification, Carabanchel retains its local essence.
Mid-City, New Orleans, USA: A diverse and colorful gem
Mid-City, located between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, took the top American spot. The neighborhood is known for its diverse local community. It's an area that bounced back from extensive flooding and now boasts artsy crowds, historical landmarks, and classic bars, making it a top neighborhood any time of the year.
