Are time-of-use tariffs cost-reflective? Is there a better alternative?

For decades, the electricity industry has operated on a system of estimated profiling for meter classes, despite trading electricity in half-hourly periods. This method, reliant on outdated profiling rather than actual consumption data, has led to inefficiencies and inaccuracies.

Consumers were left with little insight into their real-time usage, limiting their ability to make informed decisions about their energy consumption.

Time of Use Tariff vs. Half-Hourly Settlement: Why the Latter is Better

While Time of Use (ToU) tariffs were a step towards more dynamic pricing, they fell short due to their reliance on generalized profile class data. ToU tariffs have not been truly reflective of the actual generation and settlement costs, leading to a "smearing of costs" over each day.

The introduction of the Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) changes this by using actual half-hourly data for settlements. This transition allows for tariffs tailored at the meter level, providing more accurate and cost-reflective pricing.

How It Serves Businesses and Consumers

The implementation of MHHS offers significant benefits for both businesses and consumers. For businesses, ensuring that meter assets are updated and functioning correctly means they can leverage the advantages of half-hourly settlements, leading to more accurate billing and opportunities to manage energy consumption better.

Consumers will benefit from more detailed insights into their electricity usage, enabling them to adjust their habits to reduce costs. This level of granularity in data supports the development of products and services that can help manage and control energy usage more efficiently.

What's the Future?

The future of the electricity market looks promising with the MHHS program. By unlocking real-time data, we pave the way for dynamic pricing models and innovative solutions that can respond to actual consumption patterns.

As electricity demand is projected to increase significantly, especially with the rise of electric transport and heating, MHHS provides the necessary infrastructure to manage this demand effectively.

This brings opportunities for businesses to create new business models, products, and services that drive towards a sustainable, low-carbon future. By partnering with others in the industry, we can aim to leverage data to reduce costs and improve energy management for all.

_______________

"Do you support the implementation of hourly or half-hourly smart metering for energy consumption?", one of the questions at our recent webinar on innovative pricing strategies for energy and utility service providers.

At MaxBill, we accept hourly or half-hourly consumption and support the setup of pricing for such consumption. Our team sets up any pricing frequency for just up to one second.?

What does it mean to be customer-centric? It's serving customer needs most efficiently, in the first place. Time of use is not that consumption reflective and thus does not allow savings on electricity bills as half-hourly settlement. Read the piece for further insights!
