Time for new solutions to old issues
House of Science NZ
Our vision: Every child in New Zealand is scientifically literate.
2023 saw numerous news articles about the sorry state of our education system:
As we embark on a new year one thing is certain: change is in the wind. The new government has education reform on the agenda which is scary - or exciting - depending on your viewpoint.
Perry Rush, Programme Director and Stakeholder Engagement at Tui Tuia Learning Circle, University of Auckland says: “True leadership flourishes in times of change because change forces us to articulate our beliefs and then act on them. Consider new initiatives as an opportunity to enact positive change and then exercise your leadership to ensure the nature of that change is powerful for young people and leaves you confident that your vision is intact.”
I love that!
I also love the renewed interest in the House of Science programmes.

And our teacher professional development ‘Whakatipu Pūtaiao’ is an evidence-based programme delivered by award-winning primary science specialists. As a result of taking part in this programme, nearly all teachers report they now feel confident about monitoring student progress in science, and can incorporate science into their local curriculum.
I dream of an Aotearoa | NZ that is a smart country where knowledge and innovation are at the heart of both economic growth and social development. A country that is the best food and fibre producer on the planet, that will play a key role in feeding the world’s 9 billion people by 2035.
House of Science contributes to this dream by ensuring young children stay curious, are taught how to think critically, and have the foundations to choose science and technology pathways later in their education journey.
We are excited about the year ahead. We know we are making a difference in hundreds of schools around the country, helping improve engagement, behaviour and attendance and look forward to growing our reach in 2024.

Absolutely! ?? Education reform is crucial for shaping our future. As Nelson Mandela said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." ?? House of Science is paving the path forward, inspiring us all! Keep up the incredible work! ??

1 年These are startling stats, and they paint a rather negative outlook as these pupils progress through high school and enter the productive workforce or tertiary training. It seems, to me, that a back-to-basics approach is necessary, and that some of the recent ‘progressive’ approaches and modifications to the curriculum need to be laid to rest, forthwith. If the rhetoric shared during the election campaign by Minister Erica Stanford MP is any indication of the intended pathway forward, a paradigm shift is not too far away, for it is needed. Hopefully, the Secretary for Education, Iona Holsted, and her team are well advanced in their planning. The House of Science NZ has a huge role to play, I suspect, because its programmes are well proven.

1 年I can imagine what a relief it is for teachers to have access to such high-quality science resources to use and it would result in them feeling more confident in delivering science to their students. Here's to a fantastic year for you and your team at the House Of Science continuing to make a huge difference.
