Over the last year I’ve seen a lot of organisations offer some exciting roles, which many people have now taken up. Opportunities had grown around higher pay rates, work-life balance opportunities, working from home, being able to participate in more interesting projects, and so forth.

In fact, not looking for a new job could slow down or even halt your career growth. These days it isn’t uncommon for someone to only spend a year or two at a role.

Here are reasons to consider looking for a new job now.

1. Better pay - With inflation rising and the cost of living going up, you may undoubtedly be faced with less money in your back pocket each week. It’s likely a new employer would pay you significantly more, rather than your employer who may simply just give you a payrise that may or may not keep up with inflation. It may not even be worth waiting for later in this year to find out about a payrise or a bonus - another employer may offer you more right off the bath.
2. Likely recession, job losses? and economic downturn - Over the last months we’ve heard the news tell us about a looming and worrying recession. This will likely lead to job losses and business failures. You may expect later this year that employers will be less reluctant to hire for new positions. This makes now an ideal time to consider looking for a job before the economic outlook worsens.
3. You’re just not happy - There doesn’t need to be a rational reason for wanting a new role. If you’re not happy, to an extent, things like better habits, improving your perception, meditation, mindfulness, spending time with your family, can all help. But, our career can play such a big role in it. You may spend 40, 50, or 60 hours a week working.

A new job can bring you new opportunities, challenges, a better pay structure, opportunity to help others, find more meaningful work, improve motivation and boost your self-esteem.

Simply put, you deserve to feel happy, and a new job is an exciting way to achieve that. Humans often seek out new challenges to excite us, and the thrill of something new can motivate us to feel all around happier.

How to get started on looking for a new job?

1. Get your CV and cover letter professionally written. Yes, pay someone to do it. I cannot stress this enough. I’ve been professionally writing CVs for 10+ years, and it is not good enough that your CV is ‘okay’ or ‘alright’ or ‘seems to be okay because it got you the last job’.? Many working professionals, including plenty of them here in New Zealand, now realise it is critical to have a professionally written CV to correctly present themselves.
2. You are in heavy competition against others, including our clients, if you do not take this step.

Warning: If you rush to simply just send your CV as it stands to a job that comes up - while it might work, a greater probability is you will sell yourself short on your first impression.

There are few second chances.

Therefore, a strong, confident ‘pitch’ with a good CV from the start is a smart idea.

Research widely - look at different organisations that you may be interested in working for, and think widely.

You may want to consider new lines of work and other industries - A change to doing something totally different could spark your motivation and send you soaring in the right direction.

Do not worry if a job you are interested in talks about needing relevant industry experience. This is often an employer’s ‘wish list’, but a candidate without all that experience can still be considered.
