Cultivating leadership is?paramount?and it starts with you. Are you motivated?
Culture is caught not taught....
So, tell me about your childhood.
While this may seem like an unusual question to ask upon first meeting an executive, it’s a great starting point to dig into learned behaviors and beliefs.?
My therapy techniques are designed to bring out the?best?in a broad range of people.
After all, we are individuals with unique thoughts and behaviors– and we all have a powerful life story.
As a matter of fact, most of my corporate clients are some of the most put-together, successful people in their profession.?So, what are they doing in therapy? They want to be ahead of the game, and they know “if it’s meant to be it’s up to me”?
Some have successful careers/businesses, but their families are falling apart. Some have a great family life, and their careers or businesses are not going well. Some have alcohol and substance abuse challenges. Some have ill health, some are looking after elderly parents and trying to raise young children.?There are many reasons why people seek professional help.
?
No problems are ever solved with the same level of thinking as when they were created.
Companies at the top of their game know that cultivating leadership is?paramount?to the success of the company’s future. A lot of companies talk a good game but when you look at their percentage of investment in their leaders, it is just that:?talk. A company that invests in its leaders goes far and beyond the initial handshake of “welcome to the company.”
As a corporate therapist, I am engaged by companies and individuals to assist them reach their maximum potential. People who take on leadership roles need to commit to being the best they can be.?“You cannot give away what you do not have”
It may be news to some, being your best self, requires work. Typically, this work is on the ‘self’.
?
During a therapy session, I try to focus on certain topics. For example, are there issues managing up? Team communication and dealing with conflict and confrontation? I also address the wider complex issues; why did this particular issue come up?now??
Oftentimes, believe it or not, a client’s?childhood?plays a significant part in how he or she performs when on the frontline (decision-making, dealing with certain pressures, confrontation, and negotiating, etc.). Our childhood can really shape our habits and who we became based on our parents’ actions and overall treatment. Fundamentally, your childhood was your first training ground, and it can follow you into adulthood, affecting you, your career/business and family decisions.?
Tip: Policies, procedures and systems can only take you so far…?
?
It is common for those who are at the top of their tree to become stuck. Often, these are the overachievers who have been in a fast race to the top. Now, they find themselves there, at a stage in their career where they’re struggling to keep their momentum.?
If an overachiever is left to wallow in their own thoughts, they’ll often find themselves quarrelling with team members and generally unhappy, sometimes even disruptive. Of course, we all know the domino effect this can have!?
If a person has stepped into “self-sabotage mode,” they may find themselves leaving the organisation and stepping out into an SME or some other adventure. You may argue that these people were ready to move on. They just needed a change, right? However, I will ask you this:?What if you had invested in them and they stayed? Great leaders, mentors, innovators are hard to come by your investment in your people and you, may just keep things on track.
Tips for dealing with workplace anxiety?
领英推荐
The more you fear anxiety, the more powerful it can become. A part of reducing anxiety is in?accepting?that sometimes work is?going?to make you feel that way. This is a lot easier said than done as it comes with practice. Next time you feel your thoughts start to scatter and your heart starts to race, simply take a moment, sit at your desk and tell yourself: “I feel anxious right now and that’s okay. I’m uncomfortable with this feeling and that’s okay. I don’t know how long this will last, and I’m okay with that.” Tell yourself these things and?really mean them. It can be surprising how much this small act can help.?Tip: take notice of your breathing, shallow breathing may just be the trigger for a “panic attack”
Workplace anxiety happens to?everyone. But for those who experience it regularly, it’s not something you should push aside or ignore. Even if you feel stressed out and under pressure, it’s important to take time to manage your anxiety. Work is important, but it’s not worth your mental health.
Take time off
Example: every three (3) months, take time off perhaps (3) three days, disconnect as much as possible “get off the grid” Don’t feel guilty about it! You deserve time to yourself and with your loved ones. There is no shortage of research?about how important it is for your mental health to take regular breaks from work to decompress and reset. It gives you something to look forward to, time to reflect, and practice gratitude. Time off also helps build resilience and resets your?“WHY”
Time off can also allow you to self-reflect if you’ve been having a difficult time at work. What’s been popping up again and again? How are you dealing with stress? Might it be time to seek therapy, counselling or coaching? Taking care of your well-being is a top priority… if you don’t feel right emotionally and physically, every aspect of your life – including work – will suffer. Lead by example, take care of yourself and those around you will do the same, which will make for an overall happier, better work / home environment.
