A Time of Mourning, An Unforgettable Legacy

Like millions?of others around the world, I am a long-time admirer of Queen Elizabeth II, and am deeply saddened by her passing.?

Bridging two centuries and remarkable change in the United Kingdom (U.K.) and the broader world, Queen Elizabeth led and reigned in an unparalleled manner.?

Consider all that this remarkable woman oversaw and accomplished. She began her public life when Britain faced the existential challenge of World War II. Over the span of her seven-decade reign (the longest in the history of the British monarchy), the Queen worked with 15 U.K. prime ministers (from Winston Churchill to Liz Truss), 14 U.S. presidents (from Harry Truman to Joe Biden), seven Roman Catholic popes, and countless dignitaries.

Over this period, the Queen led with grace and a keen eye to what was required at that particular moment. Inspirational and pragmatic in the difficult post-war years, she oversaw the dismantling of the British Empire, the peace and prosperity of a Europe no longer at war, and the outbreak of peace in Ireland. Indeed, most pivotal moments during the last near-century often featured the Queen playing some important role. And, as a fixture on the world stage for seven decades, the Queen exemplified the very best of leadership -- duty and wisdom -- and the British spirit -- sanguine and reserved, altruistic and self-effacing, witty and wise.

It is often remarked how Americans rebelled against the British Crown yet are inveterate admirers of British royalty. I believe this paradox is explained by the fact that for most of us, Queen Elizabeth II is?the Crown.?
