Short prison sentences for women: Kelly shares her story with Radio 4

Earlier this month Kelly, a woman who Working Chance supported into work, shared her personal experiences of prison on BBC Radio 4.

“A lot of it was linked to adverse childhood experiences, trauma and domestic violence.”

Kelly talked about the devastating impact of short prison sentences, sharing what is was like to be sent to prison and the impact this had on her and her daughter. It's vital that the new government focuses on diverting women away from the criminal justice system, instead of subjecting them to multiple prison sentences.

Statement: James Timpson appointed as Minister for Prisons, Parole, and Probation

After the general election, James Timpson joined the cabinet as prisons minister, bringing expertise in helping people transition from prison to employment. ?

“James Timpson understands that sentencing reform is the key to tackling the prisons crisis in the longer term and we would urge him to be radical in this, particularly with sentencing for women.”

- Natasha Finlayson, Chief Executive, Working Chance
