Secrets in Time Mastery
Most energy is lost not through the actual dealing with life but through the worrying about it. When working with clients who are stressed and anxious I will often have the following conversation with them
Me: 'If you think about everything you need to get done in the next year how stressed do you feel? Out of 10 - where 10 is really stressed.'
C: 'Oooh, definitely a 9'
Me: 'Ok, and if you just think about the next month?'
C: '7.5'
Me: 'Week?'
C: '4'
Me: 'Day?'
C: 'The day I can handle - 1'
You only ever have to handle a day. You could never deal with a year all at once even if you wanted to.
Worrying is Not Planning
Now the usual response here is ‘but....you have to plan the year, month, week... you have to plan the exam to get the timing right’. Yes, plan yes. Planning is a fully present activity. Worry however is not.
Worrying is what people do while they are supposed to be doing something else. They are supposed to be working and they are worrying about family problems. They are supposed to be enjoying a Sunday afternoon with the kids but they are worrying about work. The result - they don’t give themselves fully to the activity they are supposed to be involved in and they feel overwhelmed by the thing they are worrying about because neither is getting 100% of your resources. Sound familiar? All too familiar for most people so what can be done about it?
The Advanced Daily Diary – My Life Changing Gift To You
I’m now going to give you a legendary invention of mine which you can do by spending just 5 minutes a day. I say legendary as it has been hailed by my clients and called things like ‘dynamite’ by listeners to my Life Coach Radio Network show. It’s called the Advanced Daily Diary and it works like this.
Each day, write a diary with a twist. A diary in advance. 24hrs in advance to be precise. Write each thing you have done as if you have already achieved or experienced it. Only write things down which you have a great influence over so no point writing ‘I won the lottery ‘etc. You are writing your ideal day which you have achieved rather than has happened to you e.g. had phenomenal focus in history class, gave an incredible presentation to the sales department and really wowed them, gave my wife really special attention this evening and felt deeply connected to her.
What you are doing is setting yourself up to achieve these activities with incredible focus, intensity and passion in advance. It has been shown through all sorts of experiments that by experiencing something in advance your brain actually sets down what are called ‘mirror neurons’ which act as a guiding system for your future action. An ape which watches another ape eating fruit ends up with the same neural pattern as the eating ape himself. The second ape is imagining being the first ape and eating the fruit and the imagination counts as a near equal in terms of neural footprints. We have an even greater capacity as humans to visualise in advance and the advanced daily diary literally engraves this practice into our daily routine and our minds.
These mirror neurons literally zone us in on the day when we actually live it. You’ll feel more confident and assured when doing the activities as if you’ve already been there before. Indeed you’ll do everything to a higher standard.
The Toughest Day of The Week
If I asked you which is the day of the week that people find the hardest you might think that it's Monday. There's evidence that shows that heart attacks spike on a Monday morning between 8am and 9am as people get ready to go to work. However, out of all the days of the week that my clients seem to have the most trouble with it is Sunday that looms as the biggest challenge. This is because of a variety of reasons but most notably people don’t plan their Sundays. They also place on Sunday the highest expectations of happiness as a result of the perceived freedom they will have. They think this wonderful ecstasy of freedom will come because of the lack of planning. The result is the exact opposite - absolute depression. Without planning and foresight, people’s haven day becomes a hell of indecision, disappointment and agonizing missed opportunity which becomes more pronounced the closer they get to Monday morning.
Use the Advanced Daily Diary for EVERY DAY, not just the work time ones. You’ll find you are living life on a different plane in your leisure activities and relationships because you zoned yourself into them in advance.
Pack Your Daily Fridge With Intention
There is another beautiful gem to be gained from the Advanced Daily Diary as a regular activity:
Do you remember when you were younger, one evening after supper and your mum asked you to put the chicken cassole dish back into the fridge? You opened the door and the fridge was packed with bits and pieces so you exclaimed ‘there’s no room!’ to which your mum gave a sigh, went to the fridge, moved around some things, took out some, put some back in, put the casserole dish in and put the massive salad dish and huge potato dish in as well!!!
Your day is like a fridge. With a little attention you can pack way more into it. This technique will allow you to get more into your day than many get into a week and if that’s done consistently you will be heading into the WM in no time.
You might argue that by planning your day out like this that you are setting yourself up for disappointment as ‘man plans and God laughs’. This is a defeatist attitude. Just because things might not go exactly as planned is not a reason not to plan. Look at war, business and sports strategy for instant proof. When things do go off course, the fact that you have outlined your priorities through your Advanced Daily Diary will help you be more decisive in how to engage with the new challenges. You will make value based decisions accordingly instead of being swept up in confusion through the changes of your environment.
Make each Day a work of art by carving it out and applying your genius to its potential rather than just stumbling upon it and slapping the paint on the canvas in an effort to ‘get through it’ and survive.
