In any business endeavor, learning to manage your time can either make you or break you.
It’s pretty rare for people to have a natural knack for time management; most of us have to practice in order to develop the skill.
It’s worth it - the ability to work well under pressure from the clock and other constraints can make you an incredibly valuable member of any team or project. It is also the mark of an excellent leader.
Here are a few tips to get started:
Conduct a time audit
Take a typical week to jot down how you use your time (it doesn’t have to be fancy, you’re just observing the reality). It’s important prep work; you’ll gain insight into where your time is actually going. It’s guaranteed to be a real eye-opener.
Batch your tasks
Checking emails, marketing, invoicing - a business person’s tasks are never done. Batching them in groups means that you’ll reduce distractions, move through the items quicker and automate smaller tasks.
Assign time limits
Reduce the urge to dawdle, multi-task, or rush through your tasks by setting a realistic time limit. This helps you develop the ability to consistently generate quality work within your parameters. After all, time is money.
Create a daily schedule - and stick with it!
Map out your workday so that you’re not flying blind. Get your non-negotiable, must-do items on there. The best time for creating your daily schedule? At the end of the workday - you’ll spend less time mentally exhausting tomorrow's to-do list overnight.
Learning to properly manage your time is a lifelong practice and it’s one that I highly encourage you to develop further no matter where you are in your career. It can easily set you apart from the competition.
