Time Management: Maximising Efficiency & Productivity
Altermans Solicitors
For 20 years we have been the law firm for success in Probate, Family, Property and Litigation .
I’m finding running these polls really interesting and am getting more insights into the challenges that we are all experiencing.
Last week we ran this poll
Are you struggling with any of these challenges?
1. Time management
2. Money management
3. Conflict - clients, colleagues
4. How to get clients
As I have had all of these challenges, I was expecting an even split. The results
surprised me – by far the biggest challenge is time management.
Time management for lawyers: Maximizing Efficiency and Productivity
In the legal profession, time is one of our most valuable resources. With lots of cases to juggle, tight deadlines and clients to advise, we often find ourselves feeling overwhelmed and chasing hard just to keep up.
Time management is crucial if we want to maintain high levels of productivity and profitability.
Why else is time management for lawyers so important? Here are my thoughts:
1. Client satisfaction. This is huge. Clients now expect their lawyers to be
responsive and available at all times. Effective time management gives you
more time to be able to speak to clients and reply to their e-mails and other
messages. This will make clients feel more positive about their experience
and prevent them from becoming frustrated.
2. Work-life balance. This is something that I firmly believe in and practice in
my own law firm. No-one should suffer burnout and decreased job
satisfaction. Effective time management can help lawyers (and everyone else)
achieve a better work-life balance, reducing stress and improving overall
well-being
3. Professional growth. Being more efficient will allow more time for

professional development.
4. Efficiency and productivity. If you manage yourself well, you can complete
more tasks efficiently, handle more cases and improve your overall
productivity.
All in all, it’s a win-win situation for you and your clients.
Time management is the cornerstone of success in any profession. But time
management can be difficult to implement. And, like anything else in life, many
people are good at saying they need to be more organised, but they don’t really
know what that means.
Time management tips for lawyers
Here are some practical tips that helped me:
Use my A-F rule - which I developed over 30 years of my professional career.
Break down tasks and prioritise them based on importance and urgency.
The A-F Rule:
A. Ask yourself: Does it absolutely need to be done? If so, when?
B. Balance. Things which have to be done but are less urgent.
C. Consequences. Things that you need to do - no significant consequences if you don't do them.
D. Delegate tasks. Delegate those tasks you do not need to do yourself. Get good at delegating!
E. Eliminate. Cross thing off your list.
F. Fantasy. More "wish list" than "to do list". Things to think about whilst you are on holiday.
Over and out for now - I’m onto the next task!
