Is there a particular area of your home that you simply ignore because it’s so cluttered and you have no idea where to begin?
It might be a closet, a storage area, a cabinet or some drawers you dread thinking about because it’s been that way for a while and it make you feel guilty. You keep putting it off until “someday” because it’s just easier than taking the time to deal with it.
It’s frustrating, though, and it’s beginning to stress you out. No matter what you do, when you walk by that area you start thinking about it.
Clutter is simply a series of postponed decisions. How much longer will you postpone the decision to clear not only the physical clutter, but also the mental clutter that’s causing you stress?
If today’s the day, if this is the moment you’ve decided to deal with that area (and perhaps other areas too) here is my favorite (and most effective) decluttering method. This highly intentional and concentrated 60 minute time period helps you focus, not allowing much time for deliberation. Start with the end in mind – a clean, uncluttered area that will you peace of mind.
The Burst Method of Decluttering
1. Select one small area of your home that bothers you the most.
2. Have boxes and large trash bags readily available.
3. Set your timer for 60 minutes. Mentally prepare yourself for being done in 60 minutes (or less).
4. Sort the clutter into 4 sections:
A. Keep
B. Donate
C. Trash
D. Sell
5. Immediately remove and dispose of all C items (trash).
6. Put all B items (donate) into a separate box/ bag. Put it in your car. Commit to delivering them within 5 days.
7. Put all D items (sell) in one area of your garage. Commit to selling them within 5 days.
8. Put all A items (keep) back into your closet, drawers, and on the shelf so they now a “home.” You will know where to find them when you need them.
Enjoy your newly decluttered space!
P.S. FYI, you are not alone… we all have one of those areas!
