Should Income be guaranteed??
The idea of the government providing a guaranteed salary to its citizens has been suggested within the last few years. Universal Basic Income (UBI) is a government program in which every adult citizen receives a set amount of money regularly. The goals of a basic income system are to alleviate poverty and replace other need-based social programs that potentially require greater bureaucratic involvement.??
Receiving payment for not working?
What benefits could be created by guaranteeing some citizens a means to obtain stable revenue?? For starters, providing guaranteed incomes would allow those who are motivated to participate in climate action without having to focus on providing for their basic needs. The reason many people of color do not participate in climate action even though it impacts their lives is that the challenge of working two jobs to make ends meet limits the amount of a person energy to do anything else 2) Another benefit could be that a basic revenue stream could keep people from slipping into homelessness in the event of prolonged job loss. If could function as a safety net against unseen circumstances.??
I believe the amount should not be enough that there is no encouragement to seek employment. In addition, there should be some stipulations attached to receiving the money, for example, not being involved in any criminal or drug related activity. Another idea could be to require the person to spend time volunteering on green projects.??

Given the cost of issues stemming from inequity what would be the problem with providing a government safety net to those in need???
For those who have tried?
No country has yet introduced a universal basic income sufficient for essential needs. But in the U.S. Alaska has enacted its Permanent Fund Dividend Permanent Fund Dividend, which is an annual cash payment, averaging around $1,600, that goes to every resident without a work requirement. It contributes to poverty reduction and has no negative effect on peoples willingness to work. So why not??
The” acquisition” of wealth by the powerful has existed throughout the American history.? Why couldn't UBI help restore some of this wealth inequity to those who desperately need it. It would be the human thing to do.?

1 年Hey there Tony, I just read your article on Universal Basic Income and I have to say - it really got me thinking. I've written about UBI before, but your explanation of its potential benefits for climate action and poverty reduction really hit home. It's inspiring to think that a policy solution like UBI could offer a safety net for those facing financial challenges and help promote greater equity in our society. Of course, there are practical considerations to take into account, but I appreciate that you approached the topic with an open mind and a willingness to consider new solutions. Thanks for sharing your insights!
