Time Goes By
Titanic vs Modern Cruise Ship

Time Goes By

Time is going to go by, we can't stop it and start it again at our convenience or will. Things change; the Titanic was a marvel of its time (and we all know how that turned out) but next to today's cruise ship it looks like a pretty well to do hobbyist's boat.

We don't have superhuman abilities like this guy:

Time goes by at the same pace it always has, pretty slowly. But things have sped up in so many fields, it's natural to think back to when things were simpler, less attached to pieces of technology, more connected to a community that provided stability, a safe, easily accessible outlets for conversing and expressing. There's no rubric for this. And time can do so much.

Nostalgia is powerful and our brains trick us to think times were better before now:

Kyla Scanlon calls it a nostalgia loop we can easily get trapped in - things are changing and uncertain, it's nice to have things we are familiar with - we're biased against volatility and the future certainly looks that way.

What money does for and to people; the lengths they'll go to get some, the ways those with more money than they can ever possibly need use it - these are what future generations will look back and study. maybe it's how they will judge us; and how are we doing, are we taking care of our money, are we using it in any way to help take care of actual, living, breathing people. or are we taking trips where we can't breathe, to show we were there, to take a cloudy picture in a tin can net to the ultimate symbol of the hubris and remnant of wealth on the sea floor? We definitely judge the old days against our ways - you probably wouldn't want to switch places with even the richest person in the 1800s - to give you an idea of health care then, Nathan Rothschild died at 59, in 1836; he wouldn't have even gotten one single social security check or been able to withdraw from his 401k (the horror)...he likely died from something called 'septicaemia caused by an infected abscess'. I don't know what that is but I assume its survivability is significantly higher today. We have a bias

Progress and time won't stop. We get older and, sorry Matthew McConaughey, nobody stays the same age. In fact, America is the oldest it's ever been, and it's only getting older.

And other people take incalculable risks to acquire money, or even a path to a chance to have access to money and what it represents - the chance for a better life, education, freedom, escaping poverty, war, hunger. The upside of a dangerous journey is worth it, to them; it's hard but necessary to put ourselves in other people's shoes, meditate on the decisions they are forced to make, what they're putting themselves and families through. And sometimes, terribly, they do not make it to the other end of that journey.

And time will keep going by. Some events, people, places will be remembered for some period of time. Most are forgotten with the next headline, the next sensation, the nextnext...if they were ever known in the first place.

How we spend our time and money are mirrors of our priorities and thoughts; so what is driving our thoughts. How can we improve the process of that conversation that's rolling internally 24/7? We are impressionable animals and no one impresses more upon us than ourselves.

But we can add to that conversation with a community that we form around ourselves; that plus family is one of the key factors for success. What you build around you is what you will become, what you take in becomes what you get out.

Things can always be better, people can always be better, do better, and be better to one another. And if we think we can't, we will be dead-right on that, as time goes by.
