Time for Fulfilment:Trading the Gold Watch
I recently updated my LinkedIn profile
and realised I've been navigating the "real" world for nine years now.
My career journey started traditionally, working in finance.
However, after 18 months,
I made a bold decision to quit and start my own venture,
much to the panic of my mother.
Working for myself for the past seven years has been a rollercoaster ride.
I've faced numerous failures and celebrated some successes.
This journey has taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, adaptability, and the importance of job satisfaction.
The tradition of long-term employment, symbolised by the gold watch tradition dating back to the 1940s,
And Pepsi no less.
The idea of "you gave us your time, now we are giving you ours" made sense when people stayed with a company for decades.
However, the modern work environment has shifted dramatically, and career changes are now more common than ever.
Reflecting on my early career, I remember feeling unfulfilled and stuck in my well paid finance job.
The decision to leave and start my own business was daunting but necessary for my mental health and overall happiness.

Through my journey, I've learned that job satisfaction goes beyond just earning a pay check.
Pursuing my passions and interests has led to a more fulfilling career, even if it meant facing uncertainty and financial instability at times.
Feeling stuck in a career can be incredibly frustrating and detrimental to one's well-being.
I've experienced moments of doubt and uncertainty, but embracing change and taking risks have ultimately led to personal growth and fulfilment.
It's essential to recognise when a career change is needed and to take proactive steps towards finding a job that brings joy and satisfaction.
Job satisfaction should be a priority, and it's crucial to look beyond the financial aspect of a job.
Finding personal fulfilment in work can lead to a happier and more balanced life.
For me, the journey of working for myself has been rewarding in ways that a traditional career path couldn't offer.
If you're feeling stuck or unfulfilled in your current job, don't be afraid to explore new opportunities or pursue the career you've always dreamed of.
Take the leap, assess your skills, develop new ones, and build a strong network to support your journey.
Success stories of individuals who made significant career changes can serve as inspiration and proof that it's never too late to find your true calling.
As I continue my journey, I look forward to the day I can buy myself a gold watch, not as a reward from an employer, but as a symbol of my hard work, dedication, and the satisfaction I've found in pursuing my passions.
Prioritise job satisfaction, embrace change, and take bold steps towards a fulfilling career.
The rewards are worth it.

4 个月Hey Lewis, I absolutely concur and I was pretty close to the so called gold.watch at the back end of a decent career, but recognised the impact it was having on the rest of.my life was almost totally negative (mood, sleep pattern family relationship ships all suffered). Whilst still challenging at times, I feel totally rejuvenated.
