TIME - The first secret in better thinking.

TIME - The first secret in better thinking.

Early on in my career, I got a chance to work closely with Stella Ogiale, the Founder and CEO of Chesterfield Health, Services. I always enjoyed seeing her looking out of our windows and thinking. During those occasions, I always told people to leave the room for her to process her thinking. Later, she’d come to us with brilliant ideas. And that’s the first seed in my quest to find the secrets to improve our ability to think later on.

My wife and I believe deeply that thinking is the important part of change and good thinking will create better changes. So, we spent our past eighteen months asking over five hundred experts around the world on their thinking practices. Our aim is to share those secrets for you to reflect, to learn, to think, and to apply and hopefully that will make you think better. In this article, we will share the first secret. That’s the first word on the word THINKING. The big T represents for Time.

Like any other skills, you’ll better by practicing it. By practicing, you need to spend time doing it, right? To think better, you must spend time to think. Four hundred and sixty five out of the five hundred experts said that they reserve time block on their calendar just to think and to process their thinking. These people are world-class speakers and consultants, executive and team coaches, best-selling authors, business executives, well-known thought leaders… and if they invest time on thinking, that must be something worthwhile for you and I to make it a practice for ourselves.

Here are some tips we collected through our interviews on this first secret and hope you can see them useful:

  • Commit to make time for thinking.
  • Schedule it on your calendar. What gets scheduled gets done.
  • Be consistent. Along the way, find what works for you and make necessary adjustments to your practice.
  • Find quiet place. Noises are the worst enemy for thinking. Try to eliminate those noises so that you can improve the quality of your thinking.
  • Take a walk. About one third of our participants said that they think better when taking a walk.
  • Write down your thoughts.
  • Practice more and practice often.

Here is our question for you: “How would you spend time to improve your thinking?".

Thinking time is the most important time of your life! It may not sound intuitive, but it is. This is when we consciously analyse and make decisions. This is when we make changes and take difficult decisions. These are moments full of magic when you look back on them in your past. Moments of fully switching off all the noise and focusing on the most important thing or purely listening to ourselves, truly change us. That is why find time for them. You can find tips about time and energy management in my article. They will allow you to be more efficient and create time for thinking. https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/how-do-you-rate-your-management-yourself-time-energy-grzegorz-hinc/
