Time for a Digital Clean Up!

Time for a Digital Clean Up!

As a?South African IT support company, we at Westech know that when you use your computer, it is inevitable that temporary files created by the operating system or apps and files that you have created, but forgotten about, are stored on your computer. Your computer, just like your house, needs a spring clean from time to time to retain its speed and responsiveness.

Delete Unnecessary Files

This deep cleaning involves clearing your system of those unwanted and unused folders, apps and temporary files and updating old passwords. You should also consider old photos, documents and spreadsheets that you still need or won’t miss.

Did you know that shortcuts can slow down your computer? Delete any unnecessary shortcuts.

Organise Your Files

Once you have deleted your digital “junk”, you will need to organise the remaining data. This is when a folder like “My Documents” comes in handy. Create sub-folders under “My Documents” and group documents by subjects so that you can quickly find relevant information. Once you’ve done this, you will realise how much sensitive data your computer stores. Your next step should be to revisit all your passwords to secure this data.

Change Your Passwords

Although using the same password for all your accounts is easier and more tempting, it is not wise to do so. If a hacker figures out your password, they can use it to access multiple accounts you hold. Each password should be unique to each account. If you battle to remember all your passwords, you may find it convenient to use a Password Manager. According to PC Mag, some of the best Password Manager Applications include;

10 Best Password Managers

  1. Keeper Password Manager?– best for secure cross-platform password management.
  2. Zoho Vault?– best for sharing features.
  3. Bitwarden?– best for open-source password management.
  4. LastPass?– best for ease of use.
  5. AgileBits 1Password?– best for password organisation.
  6. LogMeOnce Password?– best for its multiple features.
  7. RoboForm Everywhere?– best for its form-completing capabilities.
  8. Password Boss?– best for browser tools
  9. Dashlane?– best for security-focused extras.
  10. NordPass?– best for business accounts.

While the abovementioned password managers are offered at a cost, you may use some of the free features with limited functionality. The following password managers offer limited functionality at no charge;

Best Free Password Managers

  • LogMeOnce
  • Bitwarden
  • PassHub
  • NordPass
  • Norton
  • Avira

Password Managers are convenient in that you will not have to remember strong, unique passwords for all your accounts nor think of new unique ones to generate. If need be, they can even help your loved ones access your accounts after your passing.
