Time Confetti

Twenty-five years ago, Leslie Perlow, now a professor at Harvard Business School, researched the experience of "time famine"?or feeling like you have?too much to do and not enough time to do it. Perlow didn't just document the problem of what has since been dubbed "time confetti," she also?designed and tested a simple solution. Others like Adam Grant now extol her simple solution which results in?65% above average productivity?(another MIT studies show up to 73%). Here’s question for you,?If someone figured out at least one meaningful and effective solution to time management 25 years ago, why haven't you implemented it??Read about?how to solve the time confetti problem.

The C-Suite of the Future

The roles we find in the C-suite are changing.

As you think about the arc of your career, take some time for this set of articles from McKinsey that looks at the roles of CEO, CMO, CHRO, CFO, COO, CIO, CTO and attempts to answer the question “What’s the most exciting thing about today’s C-suite? The fact that it’s changing.”

Take some time to explore?“What is the C-Suite?”??The link also takes you to other McKinsey articles on the roles of CMO, CTO, CHRO and more.

FOBO

One author around addressing fear is Patrick McGinniss. He has done research on?FOMO??(fear of missing out) and?FOBO?(fear of a better offer) and most recent?FOFO?(fear of finding out).

To this list, I’ll add a new one?FOBO Fear of Becoming Obsolete.?This fear often arises from the introduction of a new technology.

While not a new fear, its most recent manifestation can be found in our newest emerging technology of Artificial Intelligence. More than a few employees are beginning to fear what may happen to their jobs as the power of AI evolves and finds its way deeper into the workplace.?Employers will need to understand this fear and?help their employees deal with it. Check out??How to Address FOBO (Fear of Being Obsolete) in the Age of AI.? An important read for leaders and employees (or parents or kids).

Here is another C-Suite position that isn't mentioned. The CSO Chief Security Officer. Cybersecurity is paramount at Lockheed Martin, where we have this position as well at the executive level. This may not be true in all corporations, but most defense contractors if not all have a CSO. Each business group in LM also has a security direstor who reports to the CSO. These individuals work with the CIO to maintain a robust information security system, and protocols. This can be cybersecurity or physical security. With hacking always a concern companies outside of defense will need experts to control propriety assets and physical assets.

Great info on time confetti, ? Sue Tinnish, PhD — thanks! For me, limiting meetings to certain days/times works, as does setting clear meeting agendas to make the most of collaboration time.

Thanks for sharing, ? Sue Tinnish, PhD, and thanks for the shout out! There are so many solutions in the world that are research-backed to improve our ability to achieve our significant results (my favorite definition of "productivity"), but that are difficult to enact. I think the reason this one doesn't work is because it relies on other people to work (but it doesn't have to!). We can't "make" anyone do anything, so if we decide that we'll only have quiet time if other people have quiet time, too, that will almost always fail, at least without a ruthless commitment starting at the top of the organization. Unfortunately, leaders are often the ones to break the "rule," and if a leader doesn't follow a rule, it's not a rule! But here's the real secret to this: you DON'T need anyone else's involvement for undistracted work time! If you work remotely, your team can only interrupt you if you allow it! Of course you can't "go dark" for hours, but for 20, 30, 60 minutes at a time, you CAN close your email, close your chat, put your phone on airplane mode, and just WORK (ideally on ONE thing at a time!). This will make everything get done faster and better! Most people think they "can't." I challenge anyone reading to try it and see!
