Is it Time to Climb A Different Mountain?
Depending on the research, job dissatisfaction among U.S. employees ranges from 51% to 60%.? The likelihood that someone reading this article is unsatisfied with their current job situation is highly likely.
?
For people who are seasoned in their careers, (Yeah, I mean those in their 40’s and up), the prospect of changing jobs, let alone changing careers is daunting, even perceived as impossible.?
?
Our minds are more likely to avoid losses than to perceive gains.? Prospect theory, developed by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky, shows that our decisions are usually based on the status quo and loss aversion.? We are hardwired for negativity.? Better the devil you know, the saying goes.
?
Unfortunately, most people will choose to stay in unfulfilling careers, fantasizing about how they will finally live happy lives when they retire.? Or maybe they count the days until their next vacation or count the hours until the next drink at the bar.? Whatever gets them through the day, or the year.?
?
But there will be some of you, who have realized that you cannot go on living this way.? Life is too short to waste away on something you don’t love.?
?
For some, you’ve reached a pinnacle and found out that even with the money, the title, or the recognition, you still feel like something’s missing. ?You still feel unfulfilled.
?
Maybe it’s not about a career anymore.? Maybe you’re ready for your vocation.
?
David Brooks, author of The Second Mountain, distinguishes between a career and a vocation.? “A vocation is not a career.? A career is something you choose.? A vocation is something that summons you.”?
?
Or maybe you’re ready for your dream.? There’s something that you’ve always wanted to do, but you placed it in the backburner filed under “maybe someday”.
?
What stops us from answering the call to something greater is usually the fear of loss.? We’re afraid of losing everything we’ve worked so hard to achieve up to this point.? We’re afraid to make a mistake.? We’re afraid to fail.? We’re afraid that what we want is not something we can actually have.?
?
But shouldn’t you fear that you die with your music still in you?? Author and Motivator Myles Munroe said it best.? “The wealthiest place on the planet is down the road.? It is the cemetery.? There lie buried companies that were never started, inventions that were never made, bestselling books that were never written, and masterpieces that were never painted.? In the cemetery is buried the greatest treasure of untapped potential.”
?
?
A client of mine was 58 years old and the Chief Financial Officer at her company making mid six figures.? She came to me for hypnotherapy initially to help her lose a few pounds.? She absolutely didn’t need to lose weight, so I knew there was something else.? It turns out she was very unhappy in her career and wanted to break out of her golden handcuffs.? After a few months of working together, she was able to find the courage to leave the “security” of her position and make the transition to entrepreneurship.? In just a couple of years, she has built a company that not only helps provide care for people with disabilities, but its growth has been explosive where she is looking to now purchase a building to house her expanding business.?
?
When your talents are aligned with your purpose, there is no limit to what you can do.
?
But first, you must believe that there is this other path.? A more aligned path.?
?
You do not have to be stuck where you are.? But you must be willing to get unstuck.? To override the negativity bias and the loss aversion.?
?
When you make this choice, you will see that the only things you will lose are the ones not truly adding to your life anyway.? But what you will gain will be immeasurable.?
?
What you will gain, no one will be able to take away from you.?
?
What you will gain is your life in all its sovereignty, authenticity, and power.?
?
What you will gain is YOU.?
