Time to change the date so that we can all celebrate
I feel privileged to live in this stunning land with (mostly) warm, funny & generous fellow Aussies. I want to celebrate Australia, its diversity, its long and rich history, the tenacity of its people. But not on this date. January 26 is not when Australia became a nation and it is not a date that we can all celebrate.
I hope next year we have a First Nations Voice to Parliament, a new date for Australia Day and a more reconciled nation that respects & values the oldest living culture in the world.
ECA's first podcast series explores reconciliation in the early years - including the complexity of 'Australia Day' and implications for educators, available on Apple, Spotify or the ECA app.
Adam Duncan's blog on The Spoke 'Australia Day, Invasion Day, Survival Day' from 2021 is still relevant today - read it here. There is also a blog from last year on Australia Day featuring Adam and Jo Goodwin, as well as many other articles on reconciliation and culturally inclusive practice.

If you want to know more about the Voice to Parliament and the referendum, or understand how you can show your support, visit Voice to Parliament or explore the education resources here: https://fromtheheart.com.au/education. We can all be part of a unifying moment in our nation's history. A Voice to Parliament recognises the more than 65,000 years of history and the future we can all share in to create fair and practical outcomes for Indigenous Australians.
A reconciled nation is the most important legacy we can leave for future generations of Australians, I hope this year we take a big step towards achieving that.

2 年Thank you for sharing this Sam. Hopefully people who are struggling to understand will follow your links and become better informed about why the 26th of January is so inappropriate as a celebration for an inclusive nation ?? ?? ??

2 年I rather liked Noel Pearson’s pragmatic suggestion - realising that changing the date is fraught, his idea is to recognise 25/1 as the end of ancient times and 26/1 as the beginning of modern times.
