Time for a Change

Time for a Change

Today is a momentous day in my professional life. It is the beginning of what I am calling my second act. I am opening a solo practice called Dignity Integrative Health and Wellness focused on longevity and maximizing healthspan.

Those of you who know me well understand my interest in staying healthy and preventing many of the diseases which appear inevitable as we age. Diseases like diabetes, heart disease, cancer and dementia. I am starting Dignity Integrative to provide a roadmap and guide for living longer and healthier and avoiding chronic disease as much as possible.

For the last 25 years I have practiced emergency medicine. It has been my privilege to treat tens of thousands of patients over that time. It has also been my honor to help lead organizations that grew over time to treat millions of patients per year. I have always loved taking care of patients. In many ways this practice is a culmination of all I have learned over these last 25 years.

Over time I came to understand the key to staying healthy as we age involves focusing on 4 specific areas:

·     Nutrition

·     Movement

·     Sleep

·     Mental Resiliency

These are simple concepts, but how we put them together most effectively and personally is not easy. I’ve read hundreds of articles and books on the links between these 4 areas and longevity. In my 50s I made the decision to go back to school to complete a fellowship in Integrative Medicine to understand much of what was glossed over or never addressed in my medical training.

I am excited to take the next steps. Part of this is personal for me. My wife, Amy, was diagnosed with celiac disease after giving birth to our last child. That diagnosis was made by a nutritionist and not her (excellent) traditional doctors. It taught me that we need to widen the scope of how we look at health. My Dad died at 79 years old after suffering with gradually progressing dementia for almost ten years. My first wife died of colon cancer at age 41.

As I look back on my personal life experiences and witness the rise of chronic disease firsthand, it is apparent that much of what we have accepted as a normal part of the aging process is largely preventable. The key is to start making small changes in our 30s and 40s to allow yourself, and your loved ones, to enjoy a long and happy life. It is never too late to start making those changes!

Dignity Integrative Health and Wellness will be a partnership. As the patient you bring your life experiences, genetics and priorities. My team will serve as a guide to get you to your desired goals and maximize your healthspan. The name DIGNITY reflects the belief that all of us need to be respected in this relationship. I look forward to working with you as we each learn along this journey to better health and wellness.

So happy for you, I can say from personal experience our bodies can cause chaos when we least expect it. You are on the right track, much of your philosophy I am researching, and my daughter has a functional medicine practice. You will be amazing at this. Congrats

Good for you Angelo. Some of my clients have told me medicine sometimes deals with just the tip of the iceberg that it can see. But there is a whole lot more under the surface that we need to start understanding. Inspiring!

This is absolutely phenomenal! Congrats & best wishes on a successful practice!!!
