Time to Celebrate National Intern Day!

July 25 is National Intern Day. Yes, it’s an actual recognized day. It was created in 2017 by WayUp, a job site for college students and recent graduates. It has since taken hold and now companies, like Citizens, are involved and celebrating interns and their positive impact on the workforce.

Why Is National Intern Day Important?

Interns can turn into great employees. Internships are a hands-on way to learn about a particular industry, gather much-needed work experience, and just may be the first step into a budding career.

Citizens has invited interns to work during the summer months for several years. This program has always been popular with college students and managers alike because it provides exposure to careers in insurance that may not be top of mind when considering future career opportunities. In addition to Information Technology (IT) and the Office of Internal Audit, other divisions hosting interns in the past are Human Resources (now a part of Administrative Services), Financial Services, Office of the General Counsel, and Communications, Legislative and External Affairs.

Cool Projects Interns Are Working On

This year’s summer interns are working within the Information Technology division. The 12 interns are supporting a variety of IT functions and are assigned to some high-profile projects to improve our internal processes and deliver high-impact results such as:

  • Enterprise Litigation Management System (ELMS)
  • Application Development and Data Analytics
  • Data Engineering
  • Applications on Microsoft Power Platform and more!

Managers’ Thoughts on the Value of Internships

Managers across the organization are supportive of interns working in their area. Vinod Tirunagari, Manager of Applications Performance Management, said their interns have shown exceptional promise and enthusiasm.

“They possess a good understanding of industry trends and the latest technologies, which has been a tremendous asset,” Tirunagari said. "Their ability to learn quickly and adapt to Citizens' culture has been impressive.”

AJ Jain, Director of IT DevOps and Software Quality Assurance, said, “This is a vital program. It’s a win-win for management and the interns. Citizens helps bright, young individuals develop and grow their knowledge base. Interns gain valuable work experience and resume-building hard and soft skills.”
