I made this ODE for Stokes without his even knowing it. I chose these quotes because they spoke to me with his voice and reminded me of him. Sometimes an ODE can be entirely one-sided. All the person need do is show up once and let me do the heavy lifting. The writing.

I opened this this morning and I shed a tear. These quotes, from James Baldwin, from Rilke, from Emerson, are precisely what I need,TODAY. I did this over a year ago in an entirely different state of mind so that I would open it, like a time capsule, now, and be buoyed by it.

Maybe that’s what these are, time capsules. Personal time capsules. I wish I could do one for you, for all of us. I took this photo in a moment of pure love and unguarded intimacy over a cup of coffee in a San Francisco cafe. Let’s go grab a coffee together, and I’ll build you a time capsule that will yield treasure upon treasure for years to come.
