Time Capsule
Mandy Mhlongo commonly known by her pseudonym ZuluTrash is a songwriter, guitarist and an undefeated battle rapper from Pietermaritzburg but currently living in Durban. Her music is mostly influenced by Don Laka and the late Sisa Sopazi. The stage name ZuluTrash comes from a play on words similar to White trash denoting the constant feeling of being left-out, forgotten and different.
?“Growing up I was always different. I was adopted at birth so I always had a sense of being unique. I realized that being cast out was actually my super power because being unique is a strength and I hope to inspire others to love themselves too...”?
Besides shredding guitar ZuluTrash has made a name for herself in the industry as a fierce lyricist and her mission to inspire and entertain South Africa and the world.
What challenges do you face as an upcoming musician in the entertainment industry?
“I think the main challenge is making money, that’s the main challenge. I’ve spent a lot of money on music, I probably only got 20% back of what I’ve spent...”
She owns two businesses one in tourism, the other one in interior designs and the game plan from now is to create a NPO that is going to help KZN women in Hip Hop because women need support.
What has been your highlight of your musical journey so far?

“One of my biggest accomplishments was gracing a Billboard at world famous Times Square, New York. I was the only female to represent KZN in SEASON 3 of ONE MIC SABC 1, making it all the way to the quarter finals. Awarded the #SHERO award in the Category of Creative Arts for my work in Battle Rap and hosting Hip Hop events at home…”
Take us through your latest project, what it is about, features, producers and all the contributors.
“The album is a reflection of the struggles we all shared in 2020. The Time Capsule aims to take the listener on a trip to this time. I wanted to re-visit this time in my life by just listening to this album. This would help me remember the house I was living in, my friends and my hardships. I make references to InTheHills in the album which is a name given to the Suburb kids, essentially the English speaking prize possessions of the newly formed Zulu middle class, the unemployed graduates, the gender liberation generation. This album encapsulates this exact time and generation and in true Time Capsule fashion, the album will be revisited in 2040. I worked with a lot of DBN artists such as Breeze, Pdogg Amazing, Ayzee, Jay-Tee, Moshine, Mc Reggie and all the songs were produced by Nino031.
